Anyone who knows me knows I love to mess around with Stranger Things lore, especially relating to the Upside Down. I've created a bit of a Flayer AU, so if there's interest in it, perhaps I'll post more about it here in the future. Here's a little tidbit:

Flayers are the apex species of the Upside Down. Since Flayers feed off of negativity, there’s not always the perfect negative target to latch onto—which is why they have to create one. Demogorgons are sent in to create an unsafe environment, to frighten and intimidate targets into becoming the negative generator the Flayer needs. An example of this is Will Byers, first known target of a Demogorgon. Demodogs are juvenile Demogorgons—both species are called Warwagers in the Upside Down and are used to launch attacks and be the foot soldiers of a Flayer. The larger and more powerful the Flayer, the more Warwagers are typically at its beck and call. Mind Flayers aren’t Warwagers. They’re two separate species.
Mind Flayers, when inhabiting a human host, will sometimes take on an appearance similar to a Demogorgon, since a Full Flayer form cannot be compacted into a human. There are noticeable differences in a Compact Flayer and a Demogorgon, including darker skin, additional tendrils, and six limbs rather than four.
