STORY:

She had been free once. Unhindered. Unshackled. Living a carefree life among the trees and the creatures of her native Caledonia. She was a warrior among her people. A warrior Princess whose name was respected by those who called her forest home.
For twenty four years she had lived within those woods and though it was by no means an easy life, as the threat of battle was never that far from reality, it was still a good life. It was her life.
Then the Romans came.
They came for war and they came for conquest.
She was a naga. By nature she was fierce, by nature she was cold blooded...
...but she in the darkest of her dreams, the most lucid of all her thought would never, could never sink to the cold blooded levels that those Roman sank to.
She saw the savagery with which they treated the local human tribes.
The barbarous ways in which they came upon the Celts.
She witnessed the "sport" they played with their own flesh and blood.
She placed her hand against the cold stone of her prison cell and sighed.
Once a Princess and now a slave. She was just a clown. A tool used to entertain the raving, ravenous, rowdy, rabble of Rome. Sometimes warriors whom they called, "Gladiators", would descend into her lair to do battle.
They came with axes.
They came with swords.
They came to kill...
...but all that came fell before her as the crowds cheered their approval. Mostly those who were sent down weren't warriors. They were peasants, prisoners, and slaves
Poor souls sent down for the beast to feed on. poor souls that were the unwanted human surplus of Rome's domain.
Just another tool to sake their never ending thirst for blood.
She looked up just as the metal hinges for the trap door above squealed in protest.
Soon another victim would be thrust into her domain.
Soon the blood sport would begin anew.

If you say the name a certain way it's going to sound like the "N" word.

Naga are mythological creatures/deities from India, and now a widely recognized fantasy creature in the west thanks to games like Dungeons & Dragons (interpretations are extremely varied, mine included since they're generally more snakelike all over, and traditionally connected to cobras).  In Harry Potter, Voldemort's snake Nagini is literally named after a form of the word naga, which I believe is Sanskrit.

I'm sorry that all you can take away from this painting is the possibility of a slur.

ArynChris In reply to BlackVinyl [2015-10-12 06:07:02 +0000 UTC]

But naga is the only word for a half-snake, half-human mythological creature, so there's no way around that.
