A DARK COMING TO
I’m awake? I don’t know. Everything’s so dark, so warm. It makes me sleepy. I can’t stretch myself. It’s like I’m cocooned. The walls are fleshy, slippery. I don’t know if my eyes are open or closed. Something smells weird. Gassy. God, plase, plase, please. Where am I? I feel like everything’s getting tighter. As if the walls were sticking closer and harder to me. What’s happening? Where am I? How did I get into this? When did all this start? All I can remember is...
AT THE BAR
I just wanted to unwind. I just wanted to have a little fun. Me and Erik, at the bar, shooting the shit. He had a whisky straight, probably trying to impress me by overcompensating. “Look at me,” he’d be thinking. “I drink like a man, I’ll take you to bed like a man, and make you feel like only a man can make a woman feel.” I wasn’t impressed. But if he played his cards right, I’d go with him, sure. Then the TV beeped loud. I covered my ears and turned to the screen to see that reporter, the female one, sitting in front of a background with the news channel’s logo. “Emergency broadcast,” she was saying. “Emergency broadcast. All citizens are to evacuate the city immediately. An infection has spread, causing people to deteriorate physically, and becoming extremely violent. Any survivors are to go to the military base in the woods. “I repeat, this is an emergency broadcast,” the reporter continued. “All citizens are to evacuate…” “What’s that about?” asked Erik. I was about to say I didn’t know when something smashed through the glass behind him. We both jumped onto our feet and stepped away from there. There was a dog on the floor among the shards of glass. It reincorporated, looked at us, and growled. Its eyes were misty white, and there were boils all over its face and body. “What the…” said Erik. A woman in the bar screamed. The dog jumped on her, taking her to the floor, clamping its jaws on her neck, and tearing out her throat. “LET’S GO.” said Erik pulling me by the wrist. I followed limply. He took me to the bar’s entrance while everyone else was frozen with terror, like I would have been had it not been for him. He opened the door, and a moaning woman threw herself on him. Her skin looked raw, but grey. Half of her face was missing, a huge flap of skin hanging from the side of her head. She grabbed on to Erik. He tried to pull her away but she slowly overpowered him, her mouth inching closer and closer to his neck. “Lily…” he said with straining voice. I got out of the bar. A hand grabbed my top, and I pushed whoever grabbed it onto Erik and that moaning woman. My blouse ripped, leaving my whole abdomen exposed. The guy I’d pushed tripped over Erik’s leg, but dragged himself quickly to it again, grasped it, and bit into his flesh through his trousers. “LILY”, he shouted. Then, his shout turned into a scream. There were more moans around me, and I ran away.
THE BURSTING HAND
I was walking by a car and a hand burst through the shattering glass of the driver’s seat. It grabbed my arm and pulled me. I tripped and fell, my arm slipping from the grasp of the hand. As I was recovering, another one of those moaning psychos made its way out of the window. The shards of glass left were digging into its skin, and cutting deep as it climbed out, leaving deep, meaty gashes that didn’t bleed. I could see its flesh glistening grey and sickly with the light of the streetlamps. I tried to get up but my sprained ankle almost made me puke. I dragged myself away but the thing...the zombie fell on my legs. I tried to pull them away but the pain immobilized me again. I reeled, trying to shake the zombie off, but I felt its putrid breath on my skin, the touch of its teeth, and pressure. I screamed. Something cracked. “Get up,” said a voice. I looked up to see a girl, about my age, with a crowbar in hand resting on her shoulder. The curved tip of it was dripping with thick, oozing matter. “Can you get up?” she asked. “My ankle.” It’s the only thing I could say. “Here,” she offered me her hand. “We have to move, or we’ll be surrounded by those things.” She helped me up. I groaned with pain. “Can you walk it off?” she said. “If you help me.” “Sure,” she said smiling kindly, put my arm around her shoulders, and we were off. “My name’s Ana,” she said. “Let’s get out of here. Do you know of a safe place?” “Didn’t you hear the broadcast?” “What broadcast?” “The one on the TV. It must have been on radio too, and everywhere else. We have to go to the military base in the forest.” “Alright. Don’t worry,” said Ana, trying to sound confident. “I’ll get us both safely there.”
PARASITES OF DREAD
“AAAAAAAAAAH” The scream was crisp and clear at first, but then, gargled and muffled. Ana hurried her step, and I had to keep up. Without her, I wouldn’t have a chance. We rounded a corner into a dark alley, where we found another girl on her knees, coughing onto the floor. I had to approach her with the girl helping me, but I just wanted to leave. “Are you OK?” asked Ana. The girl kept coughing. A worm fell on the floor. “A thing—” the coughing girl tried to speak. She drew in air forcefully, as if something was blocking the path to her lungs. “Put in my mouth—It went away.” Something squealed in the darkness deeper into the alleyway. “Let’s go,” said Ana. “I can’t,” said the coughing girl. “You have to. You two go. I’ll cover you.” The coughing girl stood as best she could, and tried to sprint slouching. I followed her at a safe distance. I didn’t want to catch the worms she was coughing up. Ana was close behind us, walking sideways to keep an eye behind her. Suddenly, she shouted, there was a blunt blow, and something cried out. Ana caught up with us. “Damn thing looked like a spider, or a flea,” she said. “Come on, we have to get out of here.”
THE SOUND OF DEATH
We were hiding behind a derelict car. The coughing girl was doing all she could to keep quiet, sitting with her back leaning on the car’s closed door. Ana and I were looking at the thing that was crawling on its hands and feet on the bridge leading out of town. “I don’t think it can see us,” said Ana. “It’s looked this way many times and hasn’t noticed us.” The thing moved slowly. The claws on its hands and feet clacked each time it lifted and rested them on the pavement. It looked...human, but with its skin flayed, and brain exposed. Its exposed muscles glistened red, brightly, and fresh with the light falling on them. “Let’s just get to the other side using the streets below, then,” I said. “I didn’t see anything in them I checked.” Ana nodded. “Help me with her.” I had to do it. Ana clearly knew how to take better care of herself than I did, and would help me survive this. But the girl was a liability. I wanted to tell her so, but didn’t dare. She might leave me if I said something she didn’t like. The girl muffled her coughs. We made our way down the sloping street that ran along the bridge. It turned to the right and back to the city, but all we had to do was jump the railing and keep going our way. Worms were still dropping from the girls mouth. She still coughed. The flayed thing landed right in front of us. Ana and I were frozen. The girl coughed. The tongue of the thing shot out of its mouth and pierced the girl’s forehead right between her eyes. I ran. The pain in my ankle hadn’t gone away completely, but I bolted like it wasn’t even there. I thought I heard Ana behind me, but I didn’t dare turn back to see. A scream wanted to escape my mouth, but I slapped it shut with both my hands, and kept running.
THE RIVER
It was Ana running behind me, it turned out. We made it to the river just outside the city. I was kneeling on the floor, panting like I’ve never panted in my life. Ana was bending over with her hands on her knees, out of breath as well. “We just have to cross the river now,” she said. “The base is close by, deeper in the woods.” “Hold on,” I told her. We were safe now and I needed to catch my breath. I could see a frog on the opposite bank of the river. There were fireflies flying around. It shot it’s tongue, and pulled one of the fireflies into its mouth. Ugh, I thought. “I never caught your name,” said Ana. “It’s Lily,” I said. “Come on. Let’s cross the river. I just want to get there and be safe.” “Yeah, I know.” I could hear Ana’s steps behind me. She stood at my side. I got on my feet and dusted my knees. One of them was scraped. I could see it through the hole in my pants. “The water’s gonna be freezing,” I said. “Yeah. But I wouldn’t know where the crossing is.” We swam to the other bank. The frog ate another firefly. I threw a stone at it, but missed, and it jumped into the water. I don’t know why, but I regretted not hitting the thing and killing it. For some reason, it felt prophetic. There was a trilling scream behind us. We looked back to see the flayed thing still after us. It came forward, but jumped back as soon as one of its claws touched the water. “Can it swim?” asked Ana. “I don’t care,” I screamed and started running again. Ana followed me. Behind us, there was a splash, and the screeching sound of the thing’s trilling screams. Maybe it drowned. Maybe it made it to our side. We weren’t going to find out. We ran without knowing that it was out of the frying pan, and into the fire.
