Description
This scene takes place while Alar is still wandering the region alone. He prefers to spend his time in the higher alpine at this point due to the threats of other packs and wolves below. He doesn't like being alone however, and the stillness and loneliness of the vast landscape makes him uncomfortable.Alar (c) me

Well doesn't this have a grandness to it. I like the way Alar is standing in the light on elevated ground with the rocky, snow covered mountains rising high behind him. The expanse seems quite desolate and wild, and in a way dwarfs his usually intimidating form; well conveying a sense of just lonely it is for him on his own. The inclusion of the faraway birds flying may perhaps even be a subtle allusion to how his friend Raban isn't with him right now, increasing the awareness of his solitude, and a sense of the sadness he might feel faced with it... Though it's true it could also work the other way, and be a reminder that although he is by himself he does have one friend he can count on when he needs to (Presuming they've already met - I'm not quite sure of the sequence of events).

I love how vast and utterly beautiful this is. Alar is just eclipsed by the size of the mountains and everything. The lighting really adds to it as well. It's so neat.

May i also ask, how would you do the highlights and shading on the mountains, on the same layer with a different colored brush, or on a different one with a filter? (overlay, color dodge etc.)

Sure! I paint mostly everything on the same layers. Sometimes I'll have two or three layers if I want to try out something. Also, I don't use any color filters on my landscape paintings. Maybe I'll tweak it with a color filter at the end, but that's about it.

Thank you! I've been trying to incorporate more colour in my paintings, so I'm glad you noticed! It definitely is a challenge. It's pretty crazy that most of those colours are actually greys!
