Description
بلاع البيزه، ألوان زيتية على قماش 100 في 80 سم
حاز العمل على جائزة معرض القرين التشكيلي ال21 لموسم 2014 - 2015

The Wad Devourer, oil on canvas (100 X 80cm). 2014.

-N.B. The Jolly Bank figure has nothing to do with racism in my painting, it's merely a representation of greed as it was popular in Kuwait back in the day and people called it (The Coin Swallower).

This is too much for words, or at least what words I have. Absolute perfection and ironically accurate depiction of our times.

Very powerful use of colour and symbolism. Immediately what strikes me is the bold, defined shapes that make up the scene; the lighting scheme is almost completely flat and highlights the objects as individuals, and paired with the absence of essentially all perspective, I feel like the symbolic nature of the scene is heightened significantly.
Like, the simplicity of the composition really allows the theme and the objects of the image to shine and convey a concept, much like something like the 'Melting Clocks', where the artwork is highly based on the idea.

That being said, the ideas that flow through this image appear very striking and immediately engaging; the thick, oozing, black liquid that seeps through the image feels very dynamic; not only is its very dark colour heightened in relationship with the light, pale wall and the bright blues of the table, but the way it's evenly distributed through the image conveys its spreading, enveloping nature.
The liquid at the top is balanced out by the lower puddle, and with the similar use of black, the painting and figurine continues to distribute the colour evenly.

I feel like drawing this link between the substance and the black colour is very powerful as used in this image; it implies their relationship and thus directly relates the portrait's character to the black liquid; it's as if he himself is a physical manifestation of the substance, again that link drawn form the similar colours. This makes a great relational foundation for the truly awesome symbolism.

The most dynamic feature of this piece has to be it symbolic quality, without a question. The heavy, smoky industrial scene captured in the painting conveys this very dirty feeling of waste and pollution. The man resting on his chair; it's heavily implied that he must be the boss or leader of this horrid factory.

However, the way he's sitting down - it's as if he's leaning back draw attention to his surroundings, like tourists showing off where they are.
This use of posture further implies the link between the industrial scene and the man, along with, as mentioned before, their common colours; it's as if he is content and pleased with his terrible factory, showing it off and bathing in its pollutants.

This level of blackness, evil and essentially selfishness is extremely powerful, and it's heightened so much by the way the liquid is funnelled into the earth.
What that symbolises to me is that this man must not only be in charge of his factory, but in charge of a much larger organisation; he's able to directly impact the planet with his products, and such products are, of course, extremely un-beneficial.

The tubing originating from the evil, tainted man implies that this black liquid is the bi-product of the industry; it's like pure industrial pollutant in liquid form.
It is the consequence; in his richness and wealthy lifestyle, this is what the man gives back; this is what the factories and industrial scene, infested with blackness and evil, gives back to the earth. This sickly, black, oozing liquid that entraps the planet, enveloping it in almost a web; bringing it down, devouring the earth.

But, perhaps what's even more powerful, it the fact that this liquid also seeps down in the image itself. This implies that this room itself is perhaps amidst this oozing liquid that covers much of the face of the Earth; not only does that draw a clever link between the metaphorical objects and the actual scene, directly impacting the audience and implying that this situation is very much real and affects us all, but it also implies that the liquid is about to ooze into the painting.
The man himself is about to face his own consequences; his own pollutants and the repercussions of his own actions.
We see this in the figurine on the table; he has already been covered by this greedy, malicious evil, tainted in his actions. This is just such a powerful portrayal of the liquid; as mentioned before, the way it's evenly distributed across the image implies how much it has spread.

The symbolism in these clearly expressed and clearly defined objects is simply captivating; the evil of the industry, the selfishness of its leaders; the horrible effect of their actions, forever tainting and seeping into the world, covering it in consequence and pollution; our pollution.
Yet we still enjoy it; the figurine, still smiling; the man in the painting, still content, still relaxed. Watching the world suffer.

A very powerful message, extremely captivating and honestly insanely intriguing with how in-depth the symbolism is.
In fact, the use of the gold frame around the painting perhaps symbolises the riches gained from the operation, but it's about to be covered and enveloped by the liquid, so that even what the men have gained from their evils is about to be lost.

See - every element, so in-depth, so profound. I feel like you deserve a lot more recognition for this very sophisticated, powerful image that truly portrays the greediness and selfishness of mankind, gaining from their loss.
Awesome work!
