Chipboard - essentially yes.  The base mask is a thick, almost like cardboard, paper mache' mask I got from a Michael's store here where I live. And I've modified it to accommodate my glasses, since I don't wear contacts. I will finish it up ultimately with a plaster layer and paint of course. I've made 4 masks total using this method, I know there's easier ways but this is the way I feel I have the most control over how I want it to look and I know it works in the long run. Lots of hot glue, too!

cool, i have every thing on hand then to make one myself using your method, i have a leather plague dr mask i made some time ago that has an accommodation for googles instead of permanent lenses, but i honestly dident know what i was doing so its on the meh side of ok because its not very ridged being sewn and all.

I wish I knew how to sew for some more costuming ideas, but eh.. The needle and thread was never a strong area in my crafting..

I think most leather plague masks look pretty cool. I myself enjoy a tougher mask just for historical accuracy, I suppose. They used to be made of wood and other such materials, I think some where also cloth/leather back then, but idk.. I like a hard mask I guess so it doesn't deform or something? Well that and mostly I love just making them this way. It's fun!

If you care to, I've posted the entire transformation of this mask in my Props and Crafts folder in my gallery. Check it out if you'd like and you'll see the whole process. It's really the best I can do of a "tutorial" sorta thing. There's front and side pictures for each advancement.

actually they here made of clay, plaster, leather, or heavy, oiled material to keep the the smell of bad humers out, theyd also stuff them with fragrant herbs.  The outfits get more complicated then that. ( i study mortuary science and had a fascination with the bubonic plague epidemic for a while.

Yeah waxed down robes and such.  I like the idea of a plague doctor, just the look and such was really appealing. Unfoooortunately they weren't too skillful compared to real physicians. xD
