A boderline Kaijune 2023 post, featuring a Spec-Evo Turtle vs. a Fantasy Dire Orca!

“The Navy didn’t train me for this bruv!”
- Hogarth Goodefellow, Were-Loggerhead

Hogarth did not plan for for one of his few days off as a fisherman, and have a simple swim in the calm blue waters just off the coast of Ulimaroa, lead him to be in the middle of a territorial/hunting clash of two of the most famous Apex Predators of Urvara’s oceans, the Grand Sea Turtle, the Ironjaw Snapper and the Sea Shredder, a dire Orca.

The Ironjaw Snapper is the largest predatory, non-dire and non-chimeric sea turtle in the world, adopting a body plan akin to long-gone reptiles of Urvara’s past, and armed with one of the most powerful jaws in the entire world, a beak that might as well be duel set of self-sharpening guillotines meant to pierce and slice through armored prey, from clams to crustaceans (even dire ones) and its favorite, other, smaller sea turtles. The fact that this mouth is also good for slicing softer game, from sharks to seals, is an added bonus… and this old male in particular would be more than happy to eviscerate this intruder who’d dare interrupt his hunt.

His opponent is the world-famous Sea Shredder, an Orca that ups the deadliness of the Killer Whale on a much larger scale, with teeth that are not only meant to grip, but also slice prey to ribbons and rip out whole chunks of larger game until they perish from either shock or blood loss, hence its name… and he’s not alone, for his mother is helping coordinating the hunt of the old turtle.

The Sea Shredder is a unique kind of Dire Beast in that only bulls can become Sea Shredders, and unlike most Dire Beasts, a bull can begin to show signs of becoming a sea shredder as soon as he’s weaned off from his mother’s milk. He grows at an exponential rate, becomes more bold and uses his ever-increasing mass to help out with the hunt… with the guidance of his mother of course. Rake marks are common and are usually relegated to the sides of the whale, for raking is both a form of discipline  as well as directing the bull on just what he can and can’t engage in. Orca pods remain matriarchal, so even if a bull is so much larger than his mother, sister and aunts, he still submits to their authority in the pod.

On the other hand, his boldness means he’s always the tip of the spear on any dangerous hunt.

The Ironjaw meanwhile, is an animal unique entirely to Urvara, for as long as sapient beings have known their existence, they have always been there, and have always been hunting armored and unarmored prey. Though the science is new to the landlubbers of Urvara, the reason for this is because the Ironjaw was naturally selected over countless generations to become larger, sleeker and more active predator, exchanging protective scales for thick and leathery skin, and long flippers meant to help with both speed and quick turns. It’s so thick and dense, that most competitors won’t even bother trying to bite through it… and that’s where the Sea Shredder’s own fearsome arsenal comes into play, as its teeth are sharp enough and a bite powerful enough to pierce through even the Ironjaw’s hide.

Unique among Sea Turtles, the Ironjaw has a greater degree of sociality, with a dominant male typically patrolling a territory of females, even occasionally sharing the remains of a kill. An experienced Snapper that shares his meals is considered a sign of fitness, as that means he's strong enough to take care of both himself, and pass on those traits to his children.

In this bout between ravenous turtle and voracious cetacean, it is age and experience vs cunning and cooperation, and if the Shredder’s aggressiveness can match the Ironjaw’s stubbornness. If the Orcas win, they get a feast… but the Turtle knows it only needs to mangle just one of the pod for the rest to scatter… and get a free meal out of it!
