Description

Finally The artist gets a upload on Deviantart. The sequel, the Salaryman will be up on my youtube channel soon.
Check out the sequel, "The Salaryman" on youtube over at youtu.be/hjmJymlEH0Y

the life that most of us artist may have experienced...
this animation should not be taken seriously. its just a visual exaggeration of how some artist maybe facing in their life.

I'm abit concern on people who may misinterpret the ending but this is my reason to the suicide scene. Because I know that suicide is a very sensitive issue to some people.

Basically, 2 guns appear in the entire animation. the shotgun and the pistol.
and, both guns appear within the room of the boss's office.

in the first scene we see the boss shoot down the artist's quote. its basically a visual metaphor of the boss not agreeing to his quote. it didnt meant literally the boss did took out a shotgun and shot it above him.

so with that said, the 2nd time we see a weapon, the pistol also happen within the confines of the boss's office. the artist took it out from his folder and shot himself.

we may say this could be literal suicide, but in the context of the first scene where the boss took out his shotgun, this scene of suicide is again a "visual metaphor" for the artist after he realise how little hes paid for the project.

also to further solidify the aspect of this theory, the rest of the scenes the artist experience is pretty much normal and nothing out of the ordinary. it only happen within the boss's office.

I play it from my personal experience of visiting the client's domain of wild thoughts going through my mind, like how the client may not take my offer or I end up blowing my proposal, its the same when I return back to get an update from them or my paycheque from them. So visually, the 2 scenes that happen in the boss's office is more or less a visual metaphor of what went through inside the artist's mind at that moment.

hope it clears up.

The symbolism is incredible... I don't have the words for how much I love this video!! Things like this extent to even commissions here on Deviantart; so many more people would be willing to jump on a train for free art, but the moment the artist opens commissions, they stop asking for art. It's depressing and I really appreciate each and every time I've gotten service in the past up to now!!~ >0<

Very cool animation! Great work! I've yet to graduate from even high school, but I've been discouraged in working as an artist; there is so much work poured into your hobby just to sustain yourself, it becomes more of a painful job. It's unfortunate how little people appreciate artists.

I totally understand what you are saying. I feel the same way when people want me to do cakes for them. I basically freelance decorate. I've had people shoot down my quotes for cakes and pastries, not understanding the time and money that goes into making them. Also they think of me as less 'professional' since I don't have a store front.

Hi NCH. Great story/animation. It speaks to me and so many of us on so many levels. I too got a degree in arts and animation - not only is it difficult to become successful in just the art department, we get less respect than those such as programmers, managers, advertisers etc. A lot of us have resorted to settling with 'regular' jobs while doing what we love most.. doing artwork on the side, as a hobby. I'm glad you made this story, it stirred something in me I can relate so deeply with. Keep up the talented work!

same thing here in this country. mainly the drive to do this animation is really a "rebel out" against our country's governance in a very subtle way.
I'm personally glad that I am able to make my hobby into my job and still enjoying it and able to still make a decent living here in this country despite its really insane policies.

To be successful in art, you must have for yourself the vision and direction a company normally gives you. That is, you have to work for yourself, and discipline yourself.

This is how I feel every time I do a freelance gig. People never want to pay much for logos or even websites, even tho they are viewed by thousands of people and are the symbol that the company is recognized by. You would want to pay well for your companies image.

Musetry [2015-01-20 17:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Exaggerated it may be, but it gets the point across.

For as important as artists seem to be, no-one seems to take them seriously at all because all they chalk their work up to is "just drawing, anyone could do that."

No, the job of the artist is as important as the job of anyone else in a company. There'd be much less success for something if it all looked like squiggles and broken lines. People who work hard to specialize in graphic artistry to try and make a living off something they love are constantly dissapointed because what they do is overshadowed as unimportant. It's all very disheartening...

Thank you for making this, NCH. I'm happy that I got a reminder for this line of work's sad tale.

Genius - and so weird that the stick figured ARTYST looked like me (when I was going door to door to Advertising Agencies). Β It really brought back memories, and unfortunately still happens in the way of KNOWing what kind of $ the client is willing to pay - so, I might start a little lower in the price. Β But after so many years in the game - I basically stick to "my Guns" and either get my deserved $ OR walk.

Also, there is no such thing as coming in person anymore. Β  I used to love doing that "face to face" but with this here Internet thing noOne needs or wants that much anymore. Β
