Navene sighed, almost something like frustration. He glanced at his lover from under the brim of his hat, thin-lipped as Kim adopted that far-off look he so often wore when he over-thought. His arm wrapped around Nikolai's pale waist and pulled him close, protective. No reaction other than a slight stir and and their eyes meeting. "You can't blame yo-"
"They were kids."

Kim would never admit to his voice cracking on the last word. But his eyes squeezed shut and ducked his head.

"They were kids." He repeated himself and shook his head. Without another word, Kim slipped past Navene's hold. And Navene was left behind, glancing at his empty hand, clutching at nothing but thin air. Another deep breath before he began his stride to follow Kim back to the village. He was almost thankful he wasn't the only one who thought about it too.
