But i still have to say that's not how towers work.

An obelisk like that is feasible even in ancient Egyptian times, as long as half of the height of said obelisk was buried underground.
For example, if you wanted an obelisk that was say, 400' tall, you would have to make it 600' in height and bury 200' of it.
With semi-modern technology that wouldn't be the case, take the Washington Monument for example, it's 550' tall with its base being only 55' wide.

Egiptian obelisks are solid stone structures and not nearly as tall, as wellΒ as both examples you have given are tapering to the top this is just a flat tower.
Plus neither are meant to be living spaces.

They were just examples of real-world obelisks to show that from an engineering standpoint this type of tower is possible.Β But since this tower is built in a land of magic and enormous ponies, it is more than possible.
