Description I love 's Scandinavia and the World and I hope my making this fan comic is ok. All the characters belong to her, except India and Native America are my concepts.

I got the idea for this after a conversation with a coworker at lunch. He was expressing his love for Roma tomatoes and mentioning how they were Italian. I said, full of sarcasm, "yeah, I picked up on that, being called 'Roma' tomatoes after all". He looked at me blankly... "'Roma'... it's Italian for 'Rome'." Yeah, sometimes I forget that my in interest in geography is more than the average American. He's not stupid or anything but I guess most Americans don't keep in mind random bits of info like what the capital of Italy is called in Italian...

So... I had this idea, and started researching it, apparently, there's a term for this: Exonym . All my research for the names also came from wikipedia, haha! I knew Spain, Germany and Japan's names before. I know there are WAY more countries I could have included but wanted to stick with ones that stick out in American minds more (Spanish and German are commonly learned languages here...) and I wasn't about to invent a new satw character for a country I didn't know anything about. I actually know something about India where I don't know much about most South American and African countries. (and I am aware that some of these countries have more than one name, especially ones with many dialects like China and India. Also decided to stick with only Roman characters.)

I specifically wanted to do countries that would have such cute reactions... that's what I love about the comics, the characters are so cute and expressive and reactive.

There are several other cute concepts people have done for India:
[link] [link] [link] [link] [link]
but since *humon hasn't done an India yet, nothing's canon. I thought a Sari would look super cute. But a boy in a Dhoti would have also been super cute. I do think I overcomplicated the outfit. The little device is supposed to be her prop (like Norway's fish... he's so cute!!) a precise measuring instrument to show she's either a scientist of an engineer, because all the Indian chicks I ever met were. I do like the !FlamingFoxDragon 's idea of India being tech support! of course, why didn't I think of that?? Stereotype to the T! India would be another child of England, wouldn't she?

So... I did the most research for Native America. My original concept had Brother Native America but I decided I wanted Native America to be America's Mom (with England as his dad). I eventually went with Algonquin for the word for "homeland" going with the idea that the Algonquins were the tribe with the most early contact with England, specifically the Virginian Algonquins. For her flag... I could not find a flag that represented ALL of the Native American nations, there are so many peoples I couldn't pick just one... the only flag they have in common is... well... the American flag. I had another idea where her top was an American flag, not just her bead-collar. Yup... that's where my thinking came from, so please don't be hatin'.

Scandinavia and the World belongs to

update: Changed China and Greece's names per suggestions.

I think it's mostly because Tsenacommacah doesn't sounded well enought to make a national anthem...

And the Tsenacommacahians now are called Americans......the vocabulary took some liberties.

Ehhh but "Roma" does not necessarily refer to the city of Rome...Half of Europe has roots (cultural or linguistic) in the former Roman Empire and the whole byzantine Empire saw themselves as being "Romaoui" or Romans, even the Muslims and Turks took this name for their enemies. Heck there still is a whole country called Romania where Romanians live... and do not forget Sinti and Roma, we will forgo the more racist and not quite so polite names given to them... Roma for a vegetable says not much about its origin.

Humon did India, he's in the secret comic (Brazil is also in it): [link]
And here's a native American flag, but for all, not just ones in USA [link] (note: not all native Americans have the USA flag in common, most live outside the USA).

Oh.
Well, still, you can use the flag (minus the symbol in the middle). But you don't have to, because "Tsenacommacah" looks fine as she is.

It makes you think.
How did we get 'Hungary' from 'Magyarország'?
And 'Finland' from 'Suomi'?
And 'Germany' from 'Deutschland'?
And 'Spain' from 'España'?
The list continues.

👍: 1 ⏩: 2

Shikku27316 In reply to skies-of-amaranth [2013-04-25 20:44:55 +0000 UTC]

Actually, most of these names aren't related.
"Magyarország" is how Hungary is called in Hungarian, but most European languages call it something that sounds like "Hungary". It doesn't come from the same word. Magyarország refers to the Magyars, or Hungarians. Hungary is derived from the "On-ogur", a tribe of Mongolians who went to Hungary.
Finland is actually from Swedish, and it means "fen land". Suomi is unrelated as well.
Germany comes from the Latin name for the land that comprises Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria (or, at least the parts that weren't conquered by Rome). The name was Germania. Deutschland comes from what the Germans called themselves (Deutsch, which means "people"), plus land.
Spain actually does come from España. Just remove the E, the a, and the ~ on the n, then add i after the remaining a. That's what happened.
Sorry, I just felt like answering this.

You're welcome! I'm sorry, I just have an interest in this, so I decided to answer your question. Some of them used to bother me too, for example, Suomi. But, now, it makes sense.

America was named after a German, actually. But only because he claimed he went to America before Columbus. He's not recognized anymore, but America still stuck after that whole fiasco.

Nebulan In reply to Xinimator [2012-12-25 18:01:29 +0000 UTC]

That's different than what they taught me in my schools, that Amerigo Vespucci was an explorer, tho not a very famous one today. Every site I find from googling says that it was named by Germans after an Italian.

Everything I know about the names I pretty much got from wikipedia, I didn't understand the difference between "Ellada" and "Hellas" for Greece, is it a dialect thing? But "Greece"? haha, why use a word that sounds like an oily substance?
