Description The making of the big bad wolf.....HUGE THANKS to ASH for making the teeth, PATRICK for cutting out and putting shit together so it doesn't fall apart, and John for lending me the use of the studio in shacklewell lane. Commissioned by Jay Green at Oakham School, leicester, England, Thanks for giving me such a cool job!

He's for an adaptation of Peter and the Wolf and other wolf related stories and folk law. Oakham school runs their drama department more like a proper theatre, they put on a lot of shows throughout the year and this ones even doing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Pacino is a bunraku style puppet, needing three people to operate him to maximum potential. He has a moving mouth and lighted eyes, jointed legs, and wagging tail. From nose to tail tip he's 6ft long. Made from aluminum, MDF, plasterzote, fake fur, styrofoam and fibre glass resin. Ooo and Milliput teeth and claws.

Woha!! What for a hige and realistic-looking wolf-puppet.
I already can imagine how it walks and do other cool stuff.
But also, that itΒ΄s pretty difficult to cooperate as a three-man-team.

Thanks a lot for the link!

The bear looks awesome, great mass description with those elastic elements... and the puppeteers of the smaller creatures are doing a great job manipulating them. The movements of the monkey are beyond my comprehension.

Initially, when I saw Hester, I had doubts how such a flat body would behave, but it looks very nice on stage.

I still wonder how Pacino's legs are solved, from what I reckon it's done with weight balancing, though I've never seen him move...

Also, if I may ask, what is the durability and repair potential of these?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nectarine In reply to spinery [2009-07-31 12:48:26 +0000 UTC]

Well as with all puppets, they need to be designed to take a degree of beating but they're not infallible.

The director informed me one of his legs came loose during a rehearsal, just a nut that had come unglued. easily fixed, new nut, new glue.

If someone was to grip a leg and snap it on ones knee you'd probably manage it, but if you look my leg with the intention of breaking it...you'd probably manage that to.

Warhorse and the Lionking have a whole department on call to maintain the puppets after each performance. I'm afraid puppets can't look after themselves as much as people do. As well as we may make them, they need constant maintenance.

Pacino is loosely jointed, he hangs like a dead body unless manipulated. If you lift a leg and let go it'll just flop down loose. I've believe the key to a good Bunraku style puppet is to have very loose joints that don't catch when you move them.

And Ben who puppeteers the monkey is THE best puppeteer I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The Monkey was designed by Nick Barnes and fabricated by Paul Vincett. He has a moving head and only one moving arm, the other is completely ridged attached to the body. The way Ben brings it to life you'd never guess!
