There's a really long back story to go with this, so I'll make it short. Cole's "lover" turned out to be a Level C vampire, and killed him. Jade walked in on the two and tried to tell her parents why Cole was dead, and they didn't believe her. It got so bad, her parents took her to a psychiatrist.
