Every home should have a guard dog. Late in the 2020 decade, a government mandate denied anyone from having more than one canine in his/her possession unless it was a job related cause. Canine pets have always been a negative environmental factor and after the melting of the Antarctic ice shelf, drastic measures had to be taken to preserve what was left of earth’s environment. So thirty years later the idea of multiple pets seems as outdated as hand held communicating devices. Wiley owned an old English Bulldog by the name of Leo. Leo was hardly a lion, overweight and asthmatic he spent much of the time sprawled across Wiley’s kitchen floor. Nevertheless, Leo was an inspiration in Wiley’s eyes. He loved the breed; stout, bitter and really loyal only to his master.

Prototype R1503N was to be an robotic interpretation of Leo (or what Leo should have been). The AI was recoded and groomed to the point that soon R1503N became hostile towards the rest of Wiley’s creations. It was perfect; a bitter, impulsive AI that only craved the admiration of it’s creator. A demolition wrecking ball and two WWIII chain guns were chosen to be the chariot of this bulldog AI. Gunpowder at the time was scarce so high pressure needle like projectiles were retrofitted into the chain guns and Needle Man was born. Wiley’s intentions of stationing his high-powered watchdog at the gates of his castle were short lived. Apparently Needle Man was too hostile and eradicated no less than five mail service robots within the first week of operation. Wiley was left no choice…his parts suppliers refused to deliver with Needle Man in place. He was relived of his duties at the castle front gate and was instructed to loyally remain in the run down hard hat factory fifty miles away from the nearest post office.

You know, now that I think of it, the original Needle Man did kind of have a bulldog face.

Great, now I can't unsee the image of Needle Man chasing after a terrified postman, and Dr. Wily running after them both with a rolled-up newspaper in hand. "No! Bad robot! BAD!"

I was making the back story up as I went and as soon as I pictured Needle Man being inspired by a dog I had to include the cliche postman. It would be an awfully funny scene for sure!
