Description
This guy gets a bad rep. I think it comes from his depiction in the Incredible Hulk Animated Series and the movies. They always depict him as the creepy jealous other guy to Bruce in his love triangle with Betty Ross and that is just not who he is.
Glen Talbot is a tragic character, starting out as a promising young military man who's devotion to his job stems from his innate desire to always do the right thing. He was brought on to Gamma Base in order to flush out a spy (The Chameleon) from their ranks and suspected Bruce Banner since he would disappear for long periods of time and suddenly return without warning. He had every right to suspect Banner since he was living an alternate life behind the scenes. Unfortunately for Talbot he fell in love with Betty Ross, but despite his feelings for her he never let his jealousy of Banner stop him from doing the right thing. He even goes behind enemy lines to save Banner's life.
Eventually Betty and Bruce's relationship sours and she moves on to Talbot. The two of them get married but he can never shake the thought that he is only her consolation prize since she could never get rid of the Hulk. At one point Betty's father is captured by the Gremlin and Talbot goes behind enemy lines again to save him. Because of the Hulk's bitterness towards the human race causing him to leave Talbot behind he is captured and left behind to be tortured beyond recognition. When they finally get him back he is practically a different man, cold bitter and damaged beyond repair. He tries to regain his old life but his relationship with Betty eventually sours and he starts to go insane.
His final moments are spent in a raving madness, having stollen a powerful weapon from Gamma Base he tries to kill the Hulk, whom he now blames for destroying his marriage, sending him and his father in law insane, and causing all kinds of emotional turmoil throughout the years (which he's not exactly wrong about). He dies trying to kill the Hulk, another victim of the insanity which plagues Bruce's life.
Talbot is a great example of the themes I believe the Hulk stories represent. Damaged people clinging together, trying to find completion in one another but ultimately causing each others downfall. If Talbot never fell for Betty he could have gone on to do far more in his career, maybe even join SHEILD and become a liaison for some super powered hero or simply lived out his life as your average Joe with a family and a life of his own, but instead he died a raving mess trying to cling to the broken pieces of his now shattered life.
It seems I have a lot to say about Hulk characters...Can't wait to see how long my description for Betty Ross gets. I have some...strong feelings about that one.
