the technique we used was taking a projector and connecting it to a laptop, later we could project any image, texture or patten (in this case it was a pattern).
the final effect was achieved by upgreading the whole thing with a smoke-machine witch gave the special effect you thoght was a menipulation and becouse the texture was solid black or white, the white areas are revealed by the smoke ...
