...How did Garrus tie that tie?
I asked because I had to tie one in my professional writing class once, and it was freaking hard!
...To anyone who is curious about that, I'm willing to share.

I really hoped no one would ever ask.
Well, Garrus hoped no one would ever ask - although it seems obvious it was a hard task for him, seeing how much troubles the cuff links are giving him.
Thing is, it's hard. Really hard to tie a tie. You know it.
But he didn't want to do it the easy way and put on a cheap, already done tie. It's Shepard after all, she deserves something real, right?
And so, the big secret behind the tie is...A lot of calibrations!

Hey, when I did it I had someone reading me deliberately poorly written directions that I was not allowed to look at for the exercise.
No, the other person did not write the directions, they just had to read them. My teacher got them on-line. There was a point I asked if he had stapled the pages out of order, and he informed that he hadn't.
Thane is probably the only one who does know how. Can you see any other male who worked on the Normandy willingly puttng on a tie? Thane's probably had to infiltrate a black-tie affair to kill someone.

Sounds awfully hard. Why couldn't your teacher just let you learn by reading yourself? For many, it's easier that way. Well, when you have good directions, at least.
Weeeeeell...On the SR2? I'd bet Joker knows how to do it, what with him being so good at flying the ship and everything. But he wouldn't let Garrus live it down ('Ha! Cripple Boy's better at something than Calibration Dude? No way!').
Jacob seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't even try, just glare deadly at the tie. Which leaves us with Ken, Zaeed and Grunt.
...Yup, only Thane. As you said, he is the infiltrator guy.

The point of the exercise was to figure out how the instructions could be improved, and that was done best by having someone read them out loud to you.
Actually, I could imagine Ken knowing how to do a tie, but that comes from the fact that I can imagine him being Catholic and thus being forced to wear a tie on a special days, and can just picture his dad carefully explaining it to him every time.
