Description Now Roy, Stop picking on Edward.

This costume is my pride and joy! This isn't even the most recent picture of it! I made everything you can see, except the pants. The boots are heavily modified combat boots, the red jacket was made from a pattern in a Japanese cosplay magazine. The black jacket is a heavily modified woman's jacket pattern. (I had to take the darts out... so hard..) I drafted up the black t-shirt so the neck would be where I wanted it. I made the gloves so they would have the signature edge that you see in the artwork, and also so they would fit my tiny hands. The clasp is made from sculpy and attached with four hat pins, and the belt is hand made from real leather that I dyed myself. I also styled the wig myself. I'm not sure if you can really see in this picture, but I have yellow custom contact as well.

I also made Roy and Riza's costumes. It's my friends Xan and Vazor. Making the patterns took the longest time. The fabric is a wool blend, and the belt and the front thicker grey sections are made from leather.

Wow. All of these costumes are really fantastic. The fabrics really show that you've studied the original images extensively to find what not only matches colors, but is representative of the weight and texture of the fabric! Props for all the research! It really shows!
Working in theater, (even though I am NOT a costumer. ;.; I can't sew well to save my life) I can't help but cringe every time I see a red-satin coat for Ed, when more likely, given the general placement of their fictional country and its parallels, and the parallels of the time period, it'd almost certainly be wool. xD
Also-- FANTASTIC job on the belt!!

Thank you *so* much for appreciating my detail! I put in *so* much effort into finding all my fabrics. I am sad to report that I have lost that particular Ed coat, but I have make a suitable replacement. I even added pockets to the new one! Also, the blue twill for Riza and Roy is no longer available from the people I ordered it from. I really wanted to make more uniforms, but I'm not sure I will now, since the fabrics won't match....
As for the belt, part of the credit goes to a fellow ed cosplayer. She did hers first, and then sent me a how-to, allowing me to take advantage of her experience, and thus make my first attempt even better!

No problem!
Oh man!! I hate it when fabrics disappear...
Have you considered buying the same twill in white (if available) and dying it yourself to match? It may take a few dye-baths on test swatches, but I'm sure you could color-match it. I know a few of my friends in the costume shop are all about dying your own fabrics.

With the belt: That's awesome! Maybe in the next year, I might ask to draw from your combined experience. xD I'm currently (being the geek that I am) working on a resin-cast automail arm with a few extra features: lighting up when you clap your hands together, and having a transmuted armgrill that seemingly grows out of the normal grill. Special effects are my favorite. But I'm awful with costumes, so do you think if when get that far and finally have to start worrying about making the costume for my Ed model, you'd mind sharing the belt-making tutorial and any extra knowledge you picked up while working on yours? I'd love it to death. xD

I have thought about dying, and I have dyed some of my fabrics, but I just haven't really gotten into it. I guess I've even purchased the necessary items (white dyeable twill and several blue dyes) to try and color match, but I have *no* experience doing it, and I worry about matching the test baths with the final, etc, etc, etc.

For the belt, my friend has given me permission to post her tutorial on my blog (that is still so very sad and vacant, but I'm trying to fix that...) So when I get that up, I'll make a post about it on DA. Would you mind sharing how you're going to do all your effects for your automail? That is the next big ed project for me, and I'm still on the fence on how to do it. My friend that made the belt is making hers out of vacuum formed polyurethane and recently I saw a thin aluminum arm backed in craftfoam! I've thought about doing the extended grill and had ideas for that, but I never thought of doing a light flash when you clap! Ed is my pride and joy, and I'm always looking for ways to make him better. I even made my own boots with the help of a cobbler! I really should get some good pics of those and post them here.

Fair enough! I can understand that.

As for the automail schematics:
I'm hoping to go into the theatrical special-effects industry with this being one of my major accomplishments to get me there.
I spent the last, literally, 5 years off and on researching the electronic information necessary to draft my clap-light design, (accidentally shocking myself with a few fully charged capacitors along the way. -dies- xD) and only now do I have an semi-stable design to actually attempt to make and test. So, I hope you understand, but before I share any information on how to make it, I have to be certain my designs will work and be safe.
I wouldn't want any actor to get shocked or catch fire! (Though Mustang might not mind if Ed catches fire... LOL)

However, maybe when I get a safely working model that I'm 98% happy with, I could custom-make you the electronic grill part specifically to use with your own automail?
I'd understand completely if this'd negate the knowledge-swap, since I don't have any rock-solid knowledge to share.
I'm sorry!

I'm a pretty big stickler on doing everything myself, but why don't you make sure you post and message me when you get it all done. Regardless of if I chose to commission, I'd *love* to see it in action!
