Description Yeah, I know, I -finally- did a tutorial!

This little gem, as simple as it looks took AGES to do (maybe 12 hours?), I don't even know why I was doing it. I was drawing the graphics for my colorists' reference and thought, 'hey, most of the work is done now; I might as well make a tutorial!' Except I forgot I had to type about 3000 words of text... *cough* yeah that was a bit harder than I anticipated!

-But not impossible!- It was actually really easy to explain things and think up new ways to explain things so they could be easily understood... I guess I'm just random like that! (Or maybe, it's simply my background in writing educational material shining through XP) I'm also somewhat thorough by nature.

This tutorial is the simplest thing I can explain to you, 'cel-shading'- I would have called it 'cel-shading for dummies' but that suggests you're dumb, where-as you're more likely just new at it or don't do cartoons. Also it doesn't get much more complex than this.

I'm not going to do a full 'how to draw', not for free, like this, at least. As I said, writing a tutorial takes ages, and drawing is a -lot- more advanced than shading, if I were to explain it to you in this manner.

Anyway, have a read, and I hope you learn something. Remember to try out shading, but only on linearts you have the permission to use (most artists on dA will have a lot of uncolored work floating around and will be happy if you ask to color it) I drew an art specifically for trying out your shading skills on at [link] - (there are also a few Naruto linearts I allow to be colored in my gallery at [link] [link] and [link] )

Anyway, tell me if you learn anything! (or simply enjoy reading it)

Major thanks to ~Yamatori-Chan and ^Hanratty-Stock for the DD!

For page 11 I think by 1 oc you meant 11 oc because the light source should become coming from the other side.

Then it will be light on both sides. There will be a dark line in the middle.

Amazing tutorial...but the 'it'? 'It' an offensive pronoun to many gender-neutral or androgynous/agender people. It's not offensive to everyone, but to some people, it's upsetting. Sorry. This is a glorious tutorial, though, very helpful.

Well, he stated that Toby is a doll and not living, so logically he would use the pronoun 'it'.

Shading has never ever been my strong suits when it comes to art. My boyfriend stumbled across this tutorial to point me in the right direction and it's quite honestly one of the helpful tutorials I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. Your 19 page tutorial has helped me more than a semester in Drawing 1. x] Thank you very much!

Why don't you add Naruto Tensi(sp?) in this format? It was very easy to read the info. Is the formatting of putting it up this way difficult? I do not know
