It had been a long night and Kimmie was very tired. She stepped out of her car and her heels glided slightly as she stepped out causing her to lose balance. She caught herself on the car door and stood up straight. After locking the door, she grabbed an over shirt and began the short trek to her apartment. The night was quiet. At this hour there was very little activity. As she got closer an unusual sound broke the silence. It sounded like sobbing. When Kimmie turned the corner from her apartment she saw Rice, the young cat girl who lived up the hill from her sitting at her doorstep in a fetal position, her head buried in her knees.

"Rice? What are you doing out here, especially at this hour?" The young girl looked up with tears in her eyes. Kimmie approached and put her over shirt around the little cat's shoulders.

"I-I'm sorry Kimmie, I didn't know what else to do." Kimmie helped her up.

"What happened? Does your mom know you're out this late?"

Rice's demeanor changed. Her lips began to quiver and tears began to flow from her eyes.

"I got kicked out!" This was a shock to Kimmie. She had known of Rice and her mother since she moved into the neighborhood and kicking out her only child was something she didn't think her mother was capable of. She put the thought to the back of her mind and focused on the sobbing cat in front of her. She took Rice into her arms.

"You can explain later. For now let's get you inside, ok?"

Rice nodded in Kimmie's bosom and the two went inside.
