Description When designing aliens, many people go for the "ultra cool" and forget that lifeforms can be ridiculous, cute or funny too. Earth has thousands of species which feature in sites like Cute Overload daily. Why should Snaiad be any different?

Blumbomen and their relatives belong in a clade characterized by the groutesque fusion of the first two heads into a vaguely humanoid "face," posession of a facial pouch connected to the genital first head, (to store opulent genitals in males, to shelter the young in females.) and a preferrance for marine littoral environments.

Most blumbomen live like penguins or small seals on Earth; cumbersome on land but graceful underwater. Their mouths conceal muscular, hose-like second heads, which are used to snap up swimming prey, or to grasp around for other organisms in sea plants, sediment or "coral" reefs. With the exception of some species that seasonally eat marine plants, they are all predators on small prey.

Some typical Blumbomen are the Greater Blumbomen (Moronops gularis) and the Spectacular Blumbomen, (Ugrops fascinatus) which prefer warm beaches around the Western continent. They spend equal time in the sea or in land, although they never stay too far away from their home beaches. Blumbomen like these are the most numerous on Snaiad, they have a high species count, including one ring-species complex around the Neomediterranean shores.

Other blumbomen, like the clawless Mikri anyx, are more at home in the sea, and return to land only to breed, or to nurse young.

The presence of a face pouch for sheltering the young has enabled Blumbomeniformes to develop purely marine forms in two separate radiations.

In one end of this spectrum is the bizzarely ornamented Eumegapteros pelagicus, (family Apodoblumbomeniformes) which has lost its back legs completely. They have harpoon-like genitals which are steered by two little fins on their tips, thought to have evolved after a sexual arms race underwater.

The Hadroblumbomeniformes, which are represented here by the truck-sized Thalassomirifex larrana, lack the specializations of the Apodoblumbomeniformes, but nevertheless thrive due to their huge size and insanely-extended second heads, which cannot be retracted into their bodies anymore. Such gigantic necks help to capture relatively large swimming prey by forming a sudden vaccum in a rapid lunge, drawing in the unfortunate victims.

The wild radiation of established bodyplans in isolated environments is a long-observed fact, and it has also worked on the Blumbomeniformes at least once with the fascinating Giant Armless Blumbomen of the remote Mapag island. The furthest these blumbomen venture into the sea is to certain swamps and rivers to drink and sleep. They are completely terrestrial, and feed on a mixture of terrestrial fruits, small animals and beached carrion. Their great size, combined with their horny head-scutes and the ability to vomit stomach acid under stress, protects them from Mapagian predators such as Rape Turtles.

The evolutionary relationships of Blumbomen are hazy, but genetic analyses suggest a tenative affinity or common ancestry with Pescidonts. Their fossil record is scant, although it hints at some very large, probably terrestrial forms.

Some Blumbomen apparently perceive people; bipedal and erect like themselves, as sexual goddesses and try to impress and even molest them with their wild genital displays. Such behavior has led to the development of local slang expressions like "Are YOU a Blumbomen?" used to refer to swingers and sexual miscreants in the local populace.

And we also shouldn't forget "Evolution, you are drunk! Go home!" type of creatures.

Blumbomen look like a mix of slug, penguin and a snowman.

I've been digging through the folders on the "Future Zoology" group and hit a patch of pure Snaiad, and these guys... man, like... I.... Jesus . These are the most original creatures I've ever seen, it's like you sat down and thought "Now how can I combine cuteness and ugliness in equal amounts, and then weaponize their penises?". I'll bet that the women-of-ill-repute in Snaiadi cities get these guys tattooed on their hips and chests, equipment fully extended no doubt! I love the look of pride that the Ugrops conveys, like he's thinking "You jealous? Yeah, you jealous". I also like how the Moai is clearly a female - her little moailing looks almost as stoic as she does.

Also: Rape Turtles? I'm note sure I want to know.

I have a question though:
Since you had the idea of diversity in earth, did this animal come from the manatee?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nemo-ramjet In reply to wolfplanet102 [2012-02-07 08:50:39 +0000 UTC]

In some cases, the ideas were not one-to-one parallels. Blumbomen were inspired by plesiosaurs and penguins alike.

"When designing aliens, many people go for the "ultra cool" and forget that lifeforms can be ridiculous, cute or funny too" I wish I could create something that make sense, but my knowledge is low and I'm lacking of my creative....so,you know, boring humanoid alla time.

nemo-ramjet In reply to Nikolaspascal [2012-02-06 09:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually you can have humanoids that are not boring... the trick is to make them convergent to the human form, but based on different origins...

wonderful, been looking for this kind of thing. (Cameron's Avatar was also interesting) whenever i try to draw an anthropomorphic being, i cant ignore how ineffective their structures are, but they end up looking ugly and inhuman... a task for me.

The Thalassomirifex larrana's second head was inspired by plesiosaurs, right?
Also, does the M. mapagalithops shown have an infant protruding from its pouch, or do its genitals simply look a lot like miniature versions of their heads?

Out of all amazing inhabitants of Snaiad, Blumbomen are my all time favorites. Do they receive the same amount of attention on Snaiad as penguins and/or seals do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nemo-ramjet In reply to DerKompsognatus [2010-03-10 09:56:10 +0000 UTC]

One of the Snaiadi cities has a Blumbomen species as a mascot. I'm sure they feature heavily in childrens' toys, and people generally find them charming.

rosutu [2010-01-06 22:28:38 +0000 UTC]

Out of all of Snaiad's wildlife, these creatures are indeed one of the strangest (and perhaps the ugliest; it's not as disturbing as some other creatures, but the wrinkles and sunken eyes don't help all too much with cuteness). I suppose that Snaiadites have to get by with what they have.

Is the Ugrops's fancy appendage able to be retracted? That doesn't look like it would allow it to swim (or perhaps, see) under the water, unless this is a terrestrial Blumboman (Blumbomen? Plural is so confusing).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nemo-ramjet In reply to rosutu [2010-01-07 11:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the facial genitals are retractible and almost every Blumbomeniforme has them.
The singular of Blumbomen is... Blumbomen again

Ah! These are just...too...cute!

The Mikri and the Moai are simply adorable, in my opinion. The Moronops is, too, but the small size of the Mikri just makes it more adorable to me, and the general appearance of the Moai makes it cute to me.

You know, it makes me wonder how people who live near areas where Blumbomen are common deal with the occasional "molestation" or sexual display.

Teehee! At first, I thought of Ewoks, or Etoli's take on the Sangheili from Halo. I like how you put little reminders of earth animals into such a way that I think of penguins and hippoes at the same time. I like the predator vibes too, as dolphins on earth are predators. I especially love the whalesque ones, and the one who reminds me of a jackfruit (tree included).
