Oh how those words had been innocent enough. How they had lay underneath the pale moonlight together. He promised her the world, he had promised her all the stars in the sky. The Great Kings of the Past he called them. He said that they guided all the lions in the world, no matter who they were. But where were they now?

He had never said the words back to her, but she didn't mind. She knew his heart could belong to another, but she was fine with that all. Right then and there, he was hers and she was his. They would stay in the recesses of the jungle for as long as they could. Every morning she slipped away, and every night she slipped back. She had fallen in love with this lion from the North.

And now he was gone.

He had always been at his spot, even if he was returning from a hunt, he craved being at that spot. She waited for hours for his return, but he didn't. She knew of his duties, how he was a prince of a land far away. He had promised he would make her queen if he ever returned. But secretly, she knew he wouldn't. It was all just a folly, all just a ruse. He hated to talk about his life back home, so empty promises were made. He would be king, and she his queen.

But he was gone.

She smelled another lion, or was it two? There was no bloodshed, and in her heart of hearts she knew it to be true. They had come for him. He had finally returned. He had returned home to win his throne. But he had not taken her with him? No, she knew it was dangerous for her to leave this place. For them.

At her paws, laying in the grass, was a single golden cub. His son, his first born son.

The cub and lioness have no names yet! The lioness is a princess of a jungle kingdom. Can you figure out who the cub is??
