Zax makes an appearance in chapter 9 because of special circumstances. I won't say why, you hafta read to find out!

I went with the alternate spelling of 'Zax'. I've seen Zack, Zacks, but I like Zax the most. (It's as debatable as Aeris vs Aerith) And although I've seen it written as Zack, most pronounce it as 'Zax' anyway.
But that's all beside the point.

I've always liked Zax with his long mane. I swear, the newer the FF7 games with him in it, the shorter his hair gets. But I like the long spiky hair, more to run your hands in and fluff.

I had some fun with Zax's new outfit. I kept the ribbed texture of the SOLDIER sweater in his jacket, and the foofy of the hammer-man pants. And of course he gets the ribbon around his arm like everyone else did from Advent Children.
So his outfit isn't a huge change, just more personalized.
