Description I wish I could do this day and moment some justice... We drove down to Durdle Door [link] in the hope of doing some long exposure photography with the Door as a back drop. We had limited time due to the fact we were booked into a restaurant that evening. We parked in the car park and walked down to the beach... The sea was crystal blue in colour and glass clear... The waves were easily approaching 6 foot in height. I set the camera up on a rock and stared into the waves.

The more I stared the stronger the urge to actually get into the water... the surf was pounding and the feeling of power was unbelievable. The beach is shingle and drops sharply into the sea. No way was I going home without swimming here. I stripped off to my shorts and stood on the edge of the beach, the first wave to hit me knocked me clean off my feet and dragged me into the sea, the second pushed me back up the beach, the third dragged me back and so forth.

I'm a fair swimmer but the power of the waves was way more than I could handle... Exhilarating, breathtaking, tiring, awesome, scary, adrenaline pumping, energising... Less than 10 minutes and I was so tired I could hardly breath... It became dangerous in the water, I really didn't have the strength to keep standing after every wave pounded me into the sea and the shingle... I waited for a wave to push me up the beach, crawled further up and just lay there.

In the end we didn't really have time for the photography... I have to say though that this was one of the most moving moments of my life. No photo will do it justice.

Why is the population so small in that area?

it's a very rural area... london is 3 and a half hours away. i suppose the young leave to find their fortunes elsewhere while the wise wish to retire there...
