Description Well here it is, after over a hundred layers of editing and lots of nights with nothing to do and I'm finally done. Considering this is only my third attempt at really trying to do digital coloring I think I did okay. I was still finding things that need to be fixed even as I was submitting it though! >_< But I guess I can't keep working on it forever.

This really makes me see how much I need to learn to make backgrounds, I'm terribly horrible at it. And I really don't like the color I used for the border but I probably spent close to 10 hours changing it and adding different textures and I never came up with anything I liked so I gave up.
And I still haven't figured out how to create a good look for skin either, oh well. Anyway, this was a great learning experience for me, and I had a lot of fun with it.

A big thank you to
Your lineart is awesome thanks for making it!

Please check out the original drawing Here <<

And as always, I appreciate any comments or tips from those who actually know what they're doing (unlike me)

Wow, I would have never guessed that you were new to digital coloring. You did a really great job, much more than you give yourself credit for. I am just learning to color digitally too, and wish my work looked as nice as this.

I really like how you colored her hair; it's really pretty. I also love how you colored her outfit and the neat patterns on it. The transparent cape is also a nice touch. The only thing I notice is that I don't see very much thrown shadows. I also think the background is fine. The colors fit well with your scheme and don't take your attention away from the girl.

Here's a link with skin coloring tutorial that I thought was helpful. I hope it helps.

Thanks for all the compliments! Yes I really do need to work on the shadows, I kinda avoided them because I figured I'd mess them up, plus I'm a little lazy! Thank you for the link I'll have to give that a try!

No problem. I hope the link is helpful.

And shadows usually aren't too hard once you decide on the light source.

XD i don't know what i'm doing, but i've been where you are, and i'd like to critique this first of all, you're really ahead of your game so don't think you're bad XD, i love your textures, and i'm proud of you for working with transparency this early ^o^ your background is awfully purty and this really is nice :] so onto tips. (y'don't have to take any XD this is just geared towards my personal taste) I'm guessing? that your lighting is from the top front right- but it'd be nice to make that more distinct, then make shads based on that light. i love her dress, but because it's purple, and the majority of the picture is blue, the eye focuses on her dress, and not her face. (but that's color theory and i'm struggling with that too) for learning about skin, what happened to me was i found a lineart of a bust, and i learned by drawing in shadows to imply bone structure and referencing. So i'd suggest you do that, since alot of linearts will definitely be boosted once you learn to draw in your own shadows. alright, i'll stop, i'm ranting, but again, kudos on the picture, you did really well, and i hope to see you grow

Thanks so much for the advice! I appreciate you taking the time to write all of it! I'll definatley work on the shadows, maybe I'll just sit down and practice just doing shading and not worrying about anything else. I kinda felt that the shading was a bit weak, and the little I had started getting lost with all the effects and layers thrown on top of it. I hadn't really thought of trying to imply bone structure through shading, I'll look into it!

Thanks again so much!

Thanks! I peeked at your work, and I really like your coloring style, It almost looks like you use color pencils and watercolor? It's a neat mix, looks good!

Well thank you fot taking a peek
I do use colour pencils and watercolours. Not always at the same time.
I like them because you can start softely and build up the colours.
Often I find it difficult to chose and find myself using the same colours

Thank you so much for taking the time to color this! I think it came out quite beautiful, really. I know your frustration with backgrounds, I've only just started to really explore that part of my artwork myself. Most of my pieces have flat color backgrounds or quickly painted clouds lol. And we all have something we dislike with our pieces, the best thing to do is just keep practicing.

For your third attempt at coloring, this is really fantastic! I love the transparent cape, that is an awesome touch and it makes it really unique! I still love the texture you used for the purple cloth, it really looks like a heavy material with those crevices in it. The only thing that my eyes keep getting drawn to is her lips. I think that shade for her lips might be a tad dark, it just sort of keeps drawing my attention away from everything else.

Beautiful work here and thank you so much!

Thanks so much! It always means a lot when the original artist gives a compliment!

Yes I definatley keep practicing, I still have a long way to go but I feel like I'm making progress so it keeps me motivated. Yeah I was debating the lip color for awhile, I think I should have dragged a random girl in from the street and asked her advice! I realized I'm not so good with color matching and things like that, another thing I'll have to work on!

Thanks again for the compliments and I look forward to more art from you!

I think everyone has trouble with colors some times. I try to look at the image a bit and think of what I want to do with it, what feel I want it to have you know? Then I put down my base colors, each 'section' on a new layer, like "coat" "pants" "skin" "Hair". Then, when I have the 'fill in' colors done, I can go back and change the color of each individual area until I get a scheme I'm happy with. Then, when I settle, I merge some of the layers together so it's not overwhelming. I usually lave skin and hair as their own layers so I can play with them seperately.

I think it is an amazing color-job. I have to commend especially the transparent parts of the clothes and the look of the metal.
I have only one tip: Try to make it perfect of course, but don't obsess over it - when you create something you will always have issues with this or that detail, but other people will see your work with different eyes.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I think I kept working on it after I should have stopped. Sometimes the more you work on something you can lose focus and things start getting muddled together. Oh well, I learned from it!
