Yoho, this is Lucifer from ProjectComment
I chose to comment on this because I myself am doing some studies to improve my drawings and I would like to share some tips I learned throughout my journey. I think you are going for a light hearted mood with your art based on the colors you used, as you work with colors with not much value difference to depict the shadow based on the reference. I feel this is fine as long as you get the shape of the shadow right. I used to use light shadows and soft brushes to cover my lack of knowledge with the form of the face and how light works as it would be less obvious of a mistake. So as a study maybe it would benefit your knowledge more if you make use of more contrasted values.
I browsed your gallery and saw that on the most recent submission, you suggested that you didnβt like drawing nose. Contrary to your idea, I really like how you draw the nose, feel like it is the feature that you are currently best at drawing right now. I think maybe itβs a part where you put alot of effort in to get the shape right but because of the time spent on it, you are getting better at spotting mistakes of your nose drawing, which makes you feel inadequate at it. Spotting mistakes is the first step to getting better. One thing that I feel would push your nose drawing is to not leave it as lineart when you are trying to make a painting without it. It makes it look off when compared to the entire painting. You have to paint the appropriate shadow to allow the nose to not need the line art for the length of the nose.
I think for the hair you did give her a good basic form. Thatβs a good start to painting hair. It would be good if you are able to make use of the light to paint the hair by breaking it down into simple subforms and slowly advance to give it a more hair like texture.
The perspective of the body is a little off as the collarbone is close to horizontal which suggest a front view but the body in the reference is close to a 3 quarter view.
In conclusion, I think you need to think about lighting more when you paint to be able to make your paintings stand on its own without the need of lineart. I may be able to do a rough paintover if you wish so, not particularly stellar but may allow you to see some changes you can make to improve. Cheers

thank you so much for the critique!! well, I'm not exactly sure what mood I'm going for,,, right now I'm focusing more on making it realistic than the mood and aesthetic! but really it depends on the occasion. sometimes I feel like this edgy teen who draws in black white and blues only, while sometimes I want the mood to be soft and cute, you know. (this also applies to my art style. like sometimes I want it to be bubbly and cartoonish while other times I want it realistic as possible if that makes sense))
and actually, I've been meaning to learn colour theory for months but I've just been putting it off. but thank you^ ill make sure to use bolder colours next time.
also, I'm glad you like it! I guess it's not that bad when I'm doing a cartoonish style, but it doesn't look that realistic and it kinda bothers me. like I've been looking for tutorials on how to make noses more realistic but I can't find any or they're unhelpful (
ohh if spotting mistakes makes you better, I'm gonna improve really quickly then haha!
yeah ill definitely do that! I really dislike the hair in this painting but I'm still trying to improve it so maybe soon it'll turn out better.
also learning proper perspective is on my to-learn list, so ill get to it too!
yes, lighting is the thing I'm trying to focus on the most right now. if you'd've seen my paintings from years/months ago, I think it's easy to say I've improved some! (here's a drawing from like 2 years ago: vld-wlw-month.tumblr.com/post/β¦ but I guess you could say my artstyle was shit in general lmao)
anyways thank you for the advice! I'll keep it in mind the next time I'm drawing <33
