Before Krypton exploded, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van sent their son Kal-El in a spaceship away from danger. This child later became Clark Kent aka Superman. Unbeknownst to him, his uncle Zor-El and his wife Alura did the same with their daughter (his cousin) Kara Zor-El. Unfortunately, she did not emerge from her pod at immediate landing, as Kal-El did. Instead she remained dormant for many years until Kal-El was nearly an adult. She then took on the role of Supergirl (and alter ego Kara Danvers) and fights alongside her cousin frequently.
