Ah yes, even in old age the tale of Icarus doesn't seem to hold strong in the minds of people. Since this is a theologian, I'd say the lesson he's about to learn is that reading and knowing scripture does not put one on the same level as God (the Sun in this picture) and pride on such things only causes those wings to melt and those hundreds of verses too abandon him as seen in this picture because despite knowing them, he didn't learn the lesson of them which truly give people moral flight and high ground. Only once known and practiced can one fly but to arrogantly say one is of higher moral authority than another because of simple knowledge and recitement of scriptures then that person shall lose the feathers of their wings with each moral teaching they failed to observe despite their knowledge.
Bery well done with a very deep meaning to it. I like that a lot. You chose a strong theme of symbolism in this picture and portrayed it well with a flying theologian. Its very insightful and can speak a lot to not only Christians but anyone who follows a religion with a written book of virtues similar to that in western religions. Very well done. You should be given praise for creating something as entertaining as this picture with a much deeper meaning hidden beneath it. Not a lot of artists can do that.

This is an excellent comment, and I'm pleased to have received it! To show my appreciation, here's an explanation of the kinds of ideas that went into the piece.

The frailty of mortal reason is, of course, the main theme. No matter how high we fly, the idea goes, we can't achieve the full knowledge of God on our own power. The wings and the streaming paper represent the works of men, and the sort of unstable flux of ideas that theologians and religious philosophers work with. Sometimes the kind of pride that a little theological knowledge brings can be dangerous, indeed paradoxically distancing the theologian from God, and to outside eyes all this can start to look a little silly!

However, I also tried to put a little tension into the picture that resists full condemnation, since I don't think that the cause of the theologian is entirely hopeless (as an amateur student of the subject myself, that would be a little hard on myself, hehe). There's something deeply right about in directing the intellect toward the things of God. For all his silliness, the theologian remains oriented toward God, and his ambitions are of the highest order, so there's a kind of nobility in that that makes the attempt beautiful. Striving to understand God opens the theologian, and even his reasonings, to redemption by God, by an act of divine grace. The dove descending from on high which might or might not rescue the fellow represents that possibility.

It's the possibility (but not the certainty) of grace and redemption unlooked-for, despite the almost comic weakness of the man in himself, that makes the philosophy of the piece distinctly Christian, I think.
