It doesn't get much lower than this. This is a scene from my fic Captivity. [link]A deeper blackness than the ocean obscured his vision, and he fought it. No, he was not going to drown, he was going to survive this! ...
The currents flung him to the surface and beat him into the cliffs again. Mecha's flailing claws lodged this time in the jagged rocks and anchored him against the sucking tide, and he lay half in, half out of the water, gasping and coughing, the world dimming, then brightening, then dimming. Water was pouring out of his mouth, and he tasted his own blood. He must have inhaled without knowing it.
He was so tired that he could hardly force his hands to grip the rocks, and there was a roaring in his ears that was not entirely the surf. When the next wave came, it would wash him off the rocks, and he would not survive another collision with the cliffs.
Edit: Cleaned up the foam and water so you can't see the individual brushmarks.

There's a lot more stories with him in it, but these are the ones where Shadow comes in, and Mecha officially breaks with Robotnik and starts experimenting with becoming organic.

I like the techniques used in this, particularly when it comes to the crashing white parts of the waves. The texture in them is really interesting. Water is such a hard thing to make look decent, so kudos for doing such a sweet job X3

Wow, the waves crashing onto tose rocks are so real, the water running down the rocks too, the shading effects gave the scene a "special touch" and you can see exactly Mecha's expression... Cool work, NR. One of the best!

I think that may be the best picture I've seen you do. :3 The waves are so realistic, even down to the spray as it breaks on the rocks and the little trickles of water running back down them (and poor Mecha). Even the waves themselves, which I've seen done so badly by so many good artists look like actual choppy waves. Can I ask if you did it using the airbrush or the paintbrush? Oh, and did I mention I'm impressed?

Thanks for the nice comment! I haven't yet mastered the airbrush, so I used various paintbrushes. I have a bunch of sponge-type brushes with neat textures, and lately I've been using those. (I'm trying to mimick the look that Painter gives a pic, because my trial version expired, and I can duplicate its look in Photoshop anyway). Then once my colors are all layered on, I go back with the Smudge tool and smooth it all out. (My original version was very rough-looking.) Oh yeah, I used most of the brushes with "Wet Edges" turned on, because I like the way they layer. And um. I think that's it. Just lots and lots of color layering is the key--and some good reference photos of waves.

I'd have been scared if you'd done that without any photo references. :3 I used to use wet edges on my old version of photoshop (or maybe it was photoshop 7 which won't install anymore, so I had to downgrade ^^) but I seem to have lost the checkbox. Might try finding it again sometime. Thanks for saying how you did it, it's really kind of you. And it is an amazing picture. I meant to fave it but I'm not so sure I did, so I'll go and do that now. I love those waves. n.n

You put amazing detail into the scenery and backgrounds in your art. The waves and cliff in this one look so incredibly realistic, and you managed to fit Metal Sonic into it really well. The darkness to the color is great. You showed that it's either night, or just dark from being stormy. Amazing color. You even drew the water drips sliding down him metal exterior. Just looking at his expression and the way he's holding on, you can tell he hasn't got much strength left. You're a great writter, too! =]

You have to take art classes in real media before you learn how to CG like this. I can't show you unless you were physically in a classroom with brushes and canvas and things. It boils down to laying in the darks first, and working lighter and lighter until you reach the highlights.

Man, wonderful job as always Netraptor. I love the work you do and I like how you drew this picture so realistic and perfect. I like the details and texture on the Metal Sonic, water, and cliff. Nice use of shadings in the rocks and different colors in the water. I like how you did the splashing effect of the water, and how you show Metal Sonic grasping on a rock on the cliff. Absolutly love how well you colored the whole picture you did, it's still amazing everytime I look at it. I feel so bad for Metal Sonic, and this little scene makes me want to read the fic now. Excellent job as alway NetRaptor.

wow!!!!!!! WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW this is TOOOOO F***ING HOT FOR WORDS!!!!! NR when i say that this is ur best work to date by far, believe me... i'm sure the other artist who has seen this pic and commented on it would agree... this is awesome... what i believe we are really taken in by is the violent crashiong movement of the waves, the picture well depicts... u are just left imagening it u can just hear th waves as they crash against the rocks... and u can just imagine the struggle... and yes the fic tells the pic a great deall which is awesome... but the cliche' goes a picture is worth a thousand words and this one greatly sums up that famous cliche'.... ^^ awesome job... i'm just blown away by the see mist and the wave movement... ^^ awe mousth droppin... i'm even a biggerfan of ur work now than ever...^^

I don't think metal sonic has lungs or blood. instead you should put 'Motor' as the lungs, & 'oil' as the blood. BTW: I'm not tryin' to flame you. It's just a suggestion.

It kind of makes more sense if you read the fic. Mecha's what they call "fleshie". In my fics he's not so much a robot anymore ... he's more of an android with quasi-biological parts. So he can drown, and it's a rather horrible prospect for him.
