OMG, I love your rats!

Yesterday, one of my little DA buddies informed me that her per rat Pinky had died, so this one is particularly poignant.

Your models are amazing. Β

Kricket was actually a boy (my heart rat, God rest his sweet little soul), but he was neutered, so he looked a bit feminine. Believe it or not, this sculpture is even more amazing in person! The littlest details are so incredible; from his tiny fingers to his curly little whiskers and the celestial shimmer on the wings that one simply cannot portray in a photo. Eve does stunning work; I truly treasure this replica of my beloved boy SO much!!

I am not taking commission for my life sized rats at this time because I have had trouble with shipping them. I will make a journal on it if I am able to take commissions for them in the future. C:

This one did much better then the first, though not perfect yet. The little finger on its right paw/hand was chipped off and there were hairline cracks on the tail. You are welcome to take a peek at the pictures that were sent back to me. ~> sta.sh/2w7jdbn5vqh

Has it always been so hard to ship with out problems? Or is it just with the Hairless?Β

At least nothing worse happened ^^

nEVEr-mor In reply to Lightfoot-Hearts [2013-10-28 01:21:09 +0000 UTC]

The hairless rats are more difficult to make but that is because I am using the color of the clay for the skin. So no paint covers any discoloration or imperfection of the clay after baking. Not really anything to do with shipping though.

I have found it very difficult to safely/successfully ship my larger sculptures in general. Pretty much anything long and thin is more likely to have troubles in shipping. A different pose of the tail would have been sturdier in this particular sculpture however this client decided she preferred the pose over the possible difficulties in shipping. So I re-enforced the armature as much as could. This sculpture's armature is much stronger all over by far then my first few attempts (Jasper and the frist Kricket).

Here you can look at my WIPs of him. ~> sta.sh/22cnyk84ju37

Very true, I am grateful nothing worse happened! I do consider it progress in the right direction. I am going to work next on making them a lighter weight over all because I think that will help lessen shifting during shipping.

Really I am still very deep in the learning process of this whole thing.

Lightfoot-Hearts In reply to nEVEr-mor [2013-10-28 02:06:18 +0000 UTC]

They do look very hard to make. Even Furry rats, I'm in the process of making a rhino sculpture, and I've never done anything out of clay, so I'm hoping I won't mess anything up lol

Yeah, how did you ship this guy? I would use a bunch of bubble wrap, news paper, and maybe even some styrofoam, but Of course, I've never shipped anything like him, so My advice isn't very good.Β

Thank you, I enjoy seeing other artists' WIPS Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nEVEr-mor In reply to Lightfoot-Hearts [2013-11-24 04:47:07 +0000 UTC]

To ship him I bought a whole foam mattress. Then cut out two sections that fit perfectly together in a box. Then carved out bits to fit in the sculpture and off he went.

Β I did use lots of bubble wrap for my jasper sculpture and that did no work out very well. >.<
