To start with, I think the artist did an outstanding job in immediately capturing the feel of an impending apocalyptic/world-ending scenario as well as making the image arresting for the viewer. The minute I saw it, I had to look twice, and then a third time because the narrative quality of the piece is so strong. There are layers worth of story contained within the details.. the corroded nature of the room; the grimy textures of the surfaces; even down to the disconcerting calm exhibited by the two children and the dog most of all. The perfect depiction of a faithful companion to the very last.
The lighting is PERFECT, the use of the shadows in the foreground deftly guiding the viewer's eye to the tableau waiting center-stage and further, the doom seen through the broken glass of the window. Overall I think the piece is amazing and the only reason I've given it four for originality is simply because I've seen this theme done.. but this is without question done WELL.

This reminds me of the film "Zathura" with the kids figuring out how to "go back one space" on the game board so everything can go back to normal.
