This is my Marketing class notebook. The professor keeps telling us how we should apply the marketing process to ourselves in order to be as appealing as possible to our prospective employers, our "consumers". It became the inspiration for this phrase.

I understand, but find worrying, the spread of commercial language into every aspect of life. Calling children education service users or consumers, and governments refering to voters in the same way. It seems that the market ideology is still consuming more of our ideology & culture...

And sadly, yes, I think the dominance of capitalism has led towards a highly commercial society and making consumption a way of life, where everything is thought of in terms of market value.
