Description
The Roman Empire, 555 AD, at the end of Justinian's campaigns to restore the Roman Empire to its frontiers. Justinian took power in 527 AD, succeeding his uncle Justin I. Justinian, born an Illyrian peasant, sought to restore the Roman Empire, over fifty years after the fall of imperial power in western Europe. In 533, Roman troops would invade the Vandal Kingdom of North Africa, conquering it, restoring the former Roman province. In 535, Roman troops would begin to enter Italy, conquering it from the Ostrogoths in 540. War with the Persians in the east and plague devastating the empire would allow a resurgence from the Ostrogoths, which the 540s and early 550s would see quelled. In 552, Justinian would send 2000 men to the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania, conquering some southern cities. However, this would not last, as the Visigoths would retake Hispania, Lombards would conquer much of Italy, and the Arabs, united under the new Islamic faith, would conquer the Levant and North Africa. However, Justinian would die in 565, before many of these forces would begin to show.
