Description Noble Nerlish November is now nearing the end with us being on its 20th day which I thought it was about time to introduce one of TR's Brighton locomotives bought right at the start of the 20th Century.

Bio:
Built at Brighton Works in 1875, A1 "Terrier" 0-6-0T No. 60 'Ewell' was one of several of the class to operate around London until displaced by other engines. In 1902, Ewell was withdrawn by the LBSCR but was kept around for a year until a buyer could be found, which happened in 1903 when Tri-ang Railways bought him off the LBSCR and had him repainted to TR Yellow, the same livery used on the two 8 class "Highlander" 4-4-0s No. 8 and 9. TR also bought a D1 which they rebuilt into a D1X prior to entering service, and a B1, with both also being painted into the same livery. Under TR service, No. 660 Ewell became TR No. 17 and chose to change his name to "Roberts", after a warship he was told was going to be built but could never clarify. Roberts was put on suburban trains but mainly say usage on Hyde-Nightingale line (the "Veteran's Line") and station pilot duties at Thorndyke Interchange.

In 1961, following an incident with ex-BR Gresley N2 0-6-2T No. 69505 "Ryan", Roberts was sent to Ashton Works for a major overhaul but due to being the last operational A1 class "Terrier" still mostly in original condition, sourcing parts was a hassle and with his decision, Roberts decided to under an A1X conversion. This was done in a manner similar to his sibling No. 77 'Wonersh', also known as No. 13 'Carisbrooke', who was sadly scrapped that year. Roberts returned to service with a new appearance that made him appear more modern that surprised many locals used to his A1 look. The rebuild also made him the last Terrier converted to A1X with the boiler made in-house by Ashton Works from Brighton Works diagrams. In 1971, Roberts was reunited with his cousin No. 122 'Leghorn', a Stroudley E1 built in 1877, and the two didn't talk much as the two had a rocky friendship in LBSCR days. Both would double-head for Roberts' centenary in 1975 which was also celebrated with tours across the UK's preserved railways. By 1990, Roberts officially handed station pilot and mainline suburban duties over to ex-BR Class 03 0-6-0DM No. 59 "Scuttlebug" and rebuilt J72 0-6-0T No. 53 "Malcolm" respectfully due to his age catching up with him and to allow him full-time operations of the Hyde-Nightingale line. As of 2022 at the age of 147, Roberts is still operational under TR but is currently on Kent to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of his class.
