A lone patrol over the slippery rooftops.... what might they be searching for?__
I'm so happy I'm finally done with this one! I've had a huge school project in art class where I investigated and explored aesthetics of fantasy worlds! So basically how amosphere, architecture, form, color and values all play a role in forming an image's certain aesthetic. And this is painting what all my experimenting, sketching and researching led up to! I made a lot of other pictures and sketches, but this is the one where I finally thought I had really captured an interesting and distinct fantasy aesthetic.
When I was painting it I started to make up stories in my head about the city... What kind of people live here? Is it a happy place? What current problems do they face? The answers I got also helped me develop the painting. :>
I'd like to hear your thoughts about this painting! I haven't really painted a lot of rain before, so does it look somewhat realistic? :s And I'm not that happy with the current title, any ideas? ^^' I also realised a bit too late that the zeppelin-ship-thing is about to fly in to the houses.. <.< well, uh, I guess it just...stands still? It's parking perhaps? heeh...

The sweeping lines of the roofs are wonderful. It looks very different from more typical cityscapes, and practically screams "interesting fantasy setting." And then there's the zeppelin. You can't go wrong with a zepplin. Particularly one with a coat of arms on the side. Since it must be an official working zepplin! It's wonderful details like that that build this city into something that definitely has a story. And a decent trade in raincoats, if the morning weather is anything to go by. Thanks for making this.

Haha don't worry, it's not like I knew you wanted to comment on it! : D
I thought of it as some kind of police patrol.. maybe stopping the residents to be outside in the night/early morning. I wanted to give the city some kind of dystopian atmosphere, so I didn't paint any light from the windows and such! Maybe the people are too afrait to light their lights because the zeps are looking for conspirators?
Also had in mind that I wanted to paint a more official-looking building in the background, so that's supposed to be those towers. It's not very obvious, but anyhow! ^^

The labyrinth of rooftops and narrow passages is beautiful, and the colors are so atmospheric... overally really believable scenery... isn't it Ankh-Morpork? Or some city from Miazaki's world, possibly?

I'm really amazed by the level of detail you manage to get into a picture. The roofs are just great. The rain is a little too subtle, I think, except on the right side where it's up against the darker roof. The grey sky makes up for the subtleness of the rain, though, so it's not really something I miss, it was just that you asked about it

I love the dark, mysterious feel to this work. It has a sort of gothic or possibly steampunk atmosphere that's really fantastic and detailed. Great job!
