Amazing! Very mammal like; especially considering this whale is always depicted more reptile like

It's really cool how your depiction seems more whale-like than most reconstructions of this animal. Really amazing (like all of your work)

That´s really a very nice painting, and I especially like the Basilosaurus in the background. The one in the foreground however is most probably wrong. It´s a typical and more than a century old mistake to depict archeocetes in a shrink-wrapped way, what often results in a very stange and reptilian depiction. Tha´ts mainly because lips, cheeks and also nasal cartilagines are totally ignore. You made already a good start as you made the head much more rounded and the neck and head much more streamlined. But the lips are much too short, they would have overlaped the upper teeth, and also extended into cheeks. I made a simple depcition of this here and wrote also more about the background of this issue:

Thanks for the comment. I agree with you. But the task was to demonstrate grin. Maybe someday I'll do this painting more correct.

It would be really nice if you would do another version anytime. Your paintings look really good, and your underwater sceneries are especially nice.
If you look at the Basilosaurus in the foreground and compare it with those in the background, you can also see that this closed mouth wouldn´t work. For some reason archaeocetes are nearly always shown either with an opened mouth full of fully visible teeth, or with a closed mouth. But without those upper lips, there would be always a gap and even at fully closed mouth, the interlocking teeth would be still visible. It´s very similar with mosasaurs. Most reconstructions show them with well visible teeth, but it´s much more probable for many reasons they had also - like all extant squamates - scaly lips and other soft tissue which made their teeth hardly visible. There are some modern squamates like crocodile monitors or even slow-worms which have even proportionally much longer and bigger teeth than every mosasaur, yet they are nearly invisible even at opened mouth.

Why the head is not correct?

It's more a feeling, I can't really put my finger on it, but when I compare the skull with your painting the snout seems to be a little strange, but maybe it's just me...
