Description More character sketches from Cealdian!

There's Breta...who's technically a character from a story within the story...
Then there's a Toby with short hair, a Toby with weird bangs, and a regular Toby.....
.....then a Joel who looks angry because I didn't finish drawing him.

I can't believe I just drew Toby and Joel AGAIN despite saying I needed to draw some of the other characters...

Not to be insulting, but many times I've thought that Toby is a woman (shame on me...).

I"m just looking through your DA Gallery... I'm happy to say that you've inspired me! I've been in a traditional art block for a while now. I just love your characters' outfit designs, and I admire the style- it's something I've been TRYING to get in my own art, but.. failed.

Do you have any tips for me? Such as, what kind of pen do you use, and any other bits of advice you've picked up? Sorry for being so annoying. :C

I'm glad I helped inspire you! Don't worry, you're not annoying at all, I like to talk to people.

Hm, tips? For pens, I usually ink with a regular bic ballpoint but do details (faces, hands, knotwork) with an 01 Micron pen.
The best advice I have is to just practice practice practice, I guess. I know it's what everyone says, but it's true. If you see a style you like, try to copy something from that artist. The next time you go to draw something of your own, a little of that style will have rubbed off on you. The same goes with drawing from life: if you draw people from life over and over, then when you finally sit down to draw your characters, you'll remember bits from that and they'll end up looking better.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I'll practice more and more and more. Right now I'm just trying to find a consistent style for my own story- I've meandered from attempted storybook look to attempted painterly digital, but I just can't seem to settle down.

So how long have you been drawing? Have you done anything professionally? Gone to school for it?

Yep, I'm at art school, a senior at RISD going for my BFA in illustration. I've been drawing since I was very little (I think it was mostly drawings of puppies and horses back then...). I've done a few illustrations for magazines, and I'm just starting a job at a game lab at MIT as an artist for one of their computer games.

Awesome. You're at where I hope to be soon. I always saw myself doing concept art or something... but I hope to work at Pixar some day. At least, that's my fantasy- a stupid little dream. :/
