Description
As an example of my recent meme of a character that people miss the point on, I chose Mary Jane Watson from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, as I've seen a lot of people criticize her, regarding what she does throughout the trilogy. But like most characters, she has legit reasons for what she does, and that's where I come in.

First off, in the first film, she was shown to have trust issues, no thanks to her abusive father, but thanks to Spider-Man, she was able to overcome said issues and decide what was best for herself, regarding both her personal life and relationships.

And speaking of relationships, she was shown to be together with Flash Thompson, prior to Peter getting bitten by the radioactive spider, until she broke up with him because of much of a bully he was and that he tried challenging Peter to a fight earlier in the film, and was later in a relationship with Harry, until his father, Norman Osborn, insulted her.

Then, in the second film, as Peter rejected her at the end of the previous film, due to his responsibilities as Spider-Man, she was engaged to John Jameson, J. Jonah Jameson's son. But throughout the film, she came to the realization that she didn't have the same spark with John as she did with Peter and Spider-Man, who earned her respect, even before learning who he was, and was also shown to return the favor every time Spider-Man saved her life; From warning him about the Green Goblin near the end of the first film, attempted to fight Doctor Octopus in the second film, to stopping Venom from attempting to kill Spider-Man by dropping a cinderblock on him, which shows that, despite being in peril, she's not afraid of being fighting back.

And speaking of the third film, there's her doing what she always dreamed about; acting and singing on stage, until she was fired, which didn't help that due Peter's Spider-Man work, she become lonely and developed trust issues again, which, by the way, is the point of character flaw; a character that's going through development showing signs of their previous selves. However, despite being Peter's weakest point, Spider-Man 3 would be considered as MJ's strongest point, as during their date, MJ outright calls Peter out for his arrogance due to his popularity as Spider-Man, as well him and Gwen Stacy, whom he rescued earlier, reenacting their iconic kiss in the rain in the first film, and was also shown to have been disappointed in Harry, who used her to break Peter's spirit while was attempting to avenge his deceased father. However, she did show that she forgave both Peter and Harry in end after being taken hostage by Venom and Sandman. Eddie Brock was basically a warning to Peter, MJ and Harry of what would happen if all three of them continued to be all high and mighty and let their arrogance consume them.

In conclusion, while Mary Jane have been heavily flawed in the Raimi trilogy, much like how most of the other characters in the trilogy were, she was given reasons for said flaws.
