How do you do the backgrounds? I mean, I don't like my backgrounds by using brushes (they look crappy), I'm sure you use something more "professional" like polygonal lasso, or...? ^^

No there's no big secret, I sketch them up real quick with a normal 10 px size hard brush, then when I'm satisfied with the result I do a more precise outline of it on a seperate layer with the same brush but this time I try to make one crisp line with one or two movements. Yeah and sometimes if I want a perfect line or shape I use the pen tool. Then when I've done the shape I press B to select brushes again and press ENTER to apply the brush exactly on the path. Hope this helps.
