Description Happy Thor's Day, folks!

Today's warm-up took me all the way to Barsoom once again, or as it is more colloquially known: Mars.

A quick perusal of my gallery will certainly reveal a passion for pulp stories in me, particularly regarding the famous John Carter saga by E.R. Burroughs. There's something about the somewhat sillyness of it that always drew my attention (despite the more obvious naked folk running around with swords ); you see, being very critical of detail, logic and accuracy, I've often found myself contemplating every aspect and inner working of many fantasy/sci-fi worlds. Which can be frustrating if the author isn't as minute as his fans. However, it is fine to just sit back and enjoy a creation for its own sake from time to time, not being overly worried about consistency and long winded explanations. That said, Mr. Burroughs did create something very special with his writing, which is praised to this day and growing up admiring many artists that became influences, you end up bumping into Dejah Thoris or the mighty Tars Tarkas. All of those things combiend have made this swashbuckling tale a well of ideas for those that are willing to dive into it, which I am of course

Pen and ink was the choice here as usual, because of time constraints but also because this medium lends itself very well to the subject at hand.Β

As usual, I hope you enjoy and thank you for your support as usual!

Is there any other type of situation in Barsoom?

I received about eight first-edition ERB hardcovers as a kid from my uncle - still have them, still treasured.

That sounds like a treasure indeed, sir! Your uncle had some good taste on him, I see

Β One thought I would leave things there, but looking at the picture again really does make me think it needs to be made into a full-fledged poster; it doesn't even need to be coloured it's so cool (though part of me wonders if black-and-red would work just as well as black and white, since it strikes me that the former would suit the Red Planet very neatly).

Β It also strikes me that one would love to see an homage to Mars as Mr Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote it scored to MARS BRINGER OF WAR ...

Thank you very much, my friend! I might go and tackle a poster format for this one if I have the time

One of the best reads of my life. I went from the Barsoom Sagas into the Ender's Game series and then into The Hobbit and then A Song of Ice and Fire for the third time, in the space of a couple of weeks. The Barsoom Saga was so refreshing to read, it's remained such an inspiration for me as a writer ever since.

Great work capturing this, Nic. Well done.

Thank you so much, my friend! These books were a huge open door into the sci-fi/adventure genre; easy to read but absolutely thrilling. Quite an accomplishment. I'm glad I could pay tribute to that greatness from my own small place

I love how 'simple' your background are yet they add SO much to the scene.
That and I always love to see Deja

Thank you, m'lady! I got it drilled into my brain from an early stage of my career that you absolutely need to have backgrounds, so I can't help them

I should practice them sometime, it's been forever since I did BG texture (my poor hand, the stress).

Even if it is just a texture, a background can add a lot to any character illustration; so yes, definitely take up the challenge if your hand agrees with you
