Description 'Subterranean Homesick Alien' by RADIOHEAD

The breath of the morning
I keep forgetting
The smell of the warm summer air
I live in a town where you can't smell a thing
You watch your feet for cracks in the pavement
Up above aliens hover

Making home movies for the folks back home
Of all these weird creatures who lock up their spirits
Drill holes in themselves and live for their secrets

They're all uptight, uptight, uptight
They're all uptight, uptight, uptight
...uptight

I wish that they'd swoop down in a country lane
Late at night when I'm driving
Take me on board their beautiful ship
Show me the world as I'd love to see it

I'd tell all my friends but they'd never believe
They'd think that I'd finally lost it completely
I'd show them the stars and the meaning of life
They'd shut me away
But I'd be alright (...)

It's been a long while since I've posted anything here on my deviantART Gallery related to UTOPIA, the world of my creation; thus, I present you with this new character I've rendered recently.
There's not much background to him yet because, as with every other character and their tales, they sort of 'appear' to me and I discover their motivations as I go along.
So, far, this gentleman's name is (obviously) The Hermit. He lives in the endles tunnels that make up the sewer systems of the Tower, way below even the lowest of levels, ever searching for something with his lamp and staff. Curiously enough, this time he found an old card from a deck that probably belonged to a Brother of the Sun; why has it come to his hands, floating in the wastes? Is that him? Those are the questions he must ponder in his solitude...

The RADIOHEAD song that gave this illustration its title is related, of course, to the creation of the image and the meaning behind it.

I hope you enjoy it!

Nicolás.-

Sweet! I was just listening to this song yesterday and remembering way back the first time I heard it when I was in high school... great song. And great art, dude.

Exactly! I always want my illustrations to have a certain significance for me and a lot of little details that may be found within time, if the person who's looking takes a second glance at the image. That snail you mention is one such detail; perhaps not something you notice right away, but that grabs a hold of your attention once you see it.

I'm glad you noticed it!

In fact,I've noticed in the first moment just because of the light rays which you did...bit strange(which does NOT mean that it is something bad),and the snail(my friend said-baby hamster),was there, shining.

Hah,I have snail eye

Heya!

+++

+++

XD

Saludos

Nicolás - is it a comic series? What exactly are you publishing? And through who? Are you self publishing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to JerMohler [2007-08-01 20:23:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, Jeremy, UTOPIA is a graphic novel I'll be publishing through a small independent publishing company called WildeTimes, whose site you can find here: [link] . The novel will be approximately 100 pages and you can order a Preview of it for free at the Online Store of the mentioned publisher's site. The cover for that Preview is here: [link]
As for the world in itself, it is meant to be a self contained Fantasy-Sci-Fi environment in which I can tell thousands of stories. Not only myself, but also anyone who wishes to do so (and abides by certain 'rules' that this world has). It isn't very different from Tolkien's Middle Earth, though much more humble for now.
I'm thinking of opening up a website related to UTOPIA when the novel is finally published and I'll keep everyone updated through my Journal here.

Anything else you want to ask, feel free to do it so!

Nicolás.-

TheSaylesMan [2007-08-01 06:32:08 +0000 UTC]

I've certainly missed your UTOPIA illustrations, man. Your character portraits are always impressive, and I'm fascinated with the subject of Tarot cards. I would love to see Tarot versions of your other characters as well.

The part of this that really stands out to me is the beard. That is some impressive work. The yellowing tips are a nice touch.

Also, if the Hermit there wants some answers about why he is on a card, perhaps he should looks at the other one floating in the muck. Perhaps the person on that one is real as well, and he or she could give him answers.

P.S.- I haven't given up on my own fan-work of UTOPIA, despite not discussing it with you for a while. I just figure it can wait until I've actually read your graphic novel. Plus it needs some tweaking still. I've discovered that one of my characters shares a name and a few personality quirks with another from a popular anime series, and that is something I did not intend at all.

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to TheSaylesMan [2007-08-01 12:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, mate! I've missed my developing UTOPIA for some time too; despite me working on the finishing touches for the novel, I feel that I'm ready to take on yet another story and other characters such as these.
The beard is something that I liked too when I finished the illustration; it's the first time I've drawn an elderly man and I'm very proud of the details that make him as a whole, such as the lines on his face and the spots on his skin.

And last (but not least!), that's a VERY good idea about him searching for another card to see where he should be headed next! I'll have to ponder about it...

Thanks again for your insights!

Nicolás.-
