Character sketch for the character Aerlyn in Gary Allen's Lath'roug Saga ([link] ).
Aerlyn is a 'wildblood', one of the native Cun people who are closely linked to the land and their ancestors. The tattoos define their history and status. There are many similarities between the Cun and Celtic people in Gary's work.

WOW.
This is a damned stunning piece of art. I absolutely adore tattoos, especially abstract twining tribal ones. The tattoos, the pose, and the expression are all extremely...well, expressive! I'm not much of an artist myself, so I know I'm not too qualified to judge this sort of thing, but I'm just rendered slack-jawed by this Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks. I was fortunate that the commissioner gave me a fairly wide interpretation of his character.

lol, he's not based on any of the lotr guys The referrence I used for the face is so completely unrelated to the final painting - he was all neat and clean shaven!

hehe, I was told to 'roughen him up a little' ... and I've had lots of comments about him looking 'hot' (which I don't think was the author's intentions!)

He looks like a very interesting character.
I'll bet that he's quite proud of his heritage also!
His tattoo's are wonderful & I love his pose.

He is a rather interesting character, a lot of things that are really hard to convey in a drawing, but pride is something important to his people so I'm glad that came across. I enjoyed the tattoos

awesome tatoos. Did you use the texture in photoshop for the paper?

Thanks, I spent a fair bit of time working out the tattoos.

Yes the sketch itself was done on ordinary drawing paper then scanned in, tweaked a bit in photshop to tidy up lines and correct a few mistakes. The 'parchment' is a scan of parchment paper that went under the drawing layer (think I set the drawing to multiply, played with some sepia layers and general mucking about with settings). I then did a small amount of burning & dodging on the parchment layer, before adding a multiply layer and a hightlight layer for the 'colours' and details.
