His scars are the most realistic looking ones I've seen in a long time. Many people's scars, in drawings, are healed over. These ones are fresh and still red, which makes them that much more painful and in my opinion, cooler. Well done on this, Nicole!

Thank you I think the scars help form his character

How long did it take you to complete this piece?

It's difficult to say as I split it over various stages to get approval from the client. Overall it was done across several weeks, but possibly about 10hours actual painting?

Love this, trying to get into this style myself but not having much luck with armour. Do you use reference material for yours or is it just from the head?

Thank you. It's a combination of references and some from my head (the client had a custom sculpture he wanted me to base the armour on). I also have a background in medieval recreation/ reenactment so actually get to play with real armour

Ah, I bet that helps I've only been doing this kind of thing for six months or so, so still very new to all of it (kinda found a hidden passion). Would you have any good places you could point me to for reference material? I love how it looks embellished enough to be from a fantasy but still definitely functional

Also should have mentioned there are some great stock accounts here on DA. [link] is one that has a fair few medieval costumes based stock images

I have as much an interest in painting as history, so enjoy researching different weapons, clothing and armour.

I can't think of anywhere specifically as I generally research a bit about the kind of armour I want, then do a google image search for specific pieces like pauldrons or vambrace, or just general searches such as leather armour or plate armour as a start. There are a few really good flickr accounts that have photos from museums (like [link] ) but these these tend to be suits of armour. However the suits evolved from hardened leather and chainmail so you can kind of make guesses as to how a leather version would work. I also look at other artists, movies, LARP costuming tutorials (I horde images and tutorials ), you might like looking at some of Daarken's tutorials if you're interested in digital painting [link]
