Ink wash and pencil on watercolor paper 11x14"I tried my very best to cram in every shop, which may be why some of the shops in the background may seem a bit disproportionate. This was a request for a Harry Potter RPG that's to come out, and all the signs for the stores needed to be visable. I am not sure if I acheived the right amount of contrast, though I spent many days layering my inkwashes.

I am amazed that you got all of those shops crammed in without making it look bad. Even if it seems slightly dispraportionate in some places it looks good, that is probably because I envisioned Diagon Alley to be not achetectuarly (sp?) sound, but rather kept up with magic. Good work!

you are correct! i like to use something called a 'sketch and wash' pencil. it gives a lot more control over where you lay down the ink.

ink wash is just ink that's been washed over the page with a paint brush. you kind of have to build it up in layers to get the darkest values.

You know, after several years of being a Harry Potter fan and having gone through three summer book releases, you think I'd have already gotten the pun on Diagon Alley's name. But no, it only occurred to me just now. I am officially slow. Love the cluttered atmosphere you got here, just the way I picture it really

i would've liked to have done more detail in the storefronts, but really there wasn't the room. it'd be fun to do the Weasley's place, with the U No Poo sign.
