Description Vicarstown. November 11, 1918.

The Chairman stood to address the engines, the workers, the crew and the soldiers at Vicarstown. All were there to attend.

"This morning, we had received news from London," he began, "that Germany has signed the armistice in agreement with the governments of Great Britain, France and the United States of America, finally ending the "Great War" that we fought so hard, with the help of our strong men and women, and our railways."

He paused for a moment.

"Over 6 million brave soldiers went overseas to battle with the German Empire and their allies. Many of them never made it home... It has been estimated that we have lost over 700,000 soldiers to this war, with 18,829 of British citizens on our soil and foreign. We all did our part to aid the war effort, we fought bravely and worked so hard to bring us this victory, but may we never forget those who sacrificed their lives to bring us to where we are now, those brave men who fought for our rights, and brought peace to our empire, and ultimately, the world..."

Everyone stood in silence there for a while, remembering and praying for those who fell during the war. No one said a word, or flinched as the chilling autumn wind blew around them. It had been a hard fought battle, and whilst there was mourning for the lost ones, relief was also felt amongst them knowing that it was finally over.

At last after 4 long years, the Great War was all over....

....

The Chairman broke the silence. "We still have our duty to remain as a coastal defense railway for the British Isles, as we're still keeping an eye on Ireland. Our soldiers will be returning home on the ships in a few days time, so I expect you all to work your best and continue on as you have before, and give our men a good welcome home when they arrive."

The engines and workmen agreed. The war may have been over, but they still had their part to do for their people and country.

It was wartime and repainting Locomotives was a rule to avoid engines being blown up.

And, it was only the beginning of a new era following the end of WW1, the original supposed War to End All Wars, before WW2 would emerge years later.

Lest we forget.

I can just imagine the sorrow in the engines' eyes sorting out the mess of the war.

How is a computer screenshot photography? It does not belong in this category.

Just imagine how Thomas must've felt at the time. He was still a young engine, much like Percy. Something must've scared him; maybe there was a battle in the island, or they suffered an air raid. Point is, he HAD to have come out of it with smoke battle scars.

Even a century later, most people probably get the chills from thinking about how many people were killed off in the Second World War, let alone the First World War.Β  Very courageous words on the North Western's Chairman's part.

being how I am I tend not to think let alone get any chills about it since I've watched many documentarys and re-enactments of them on the National Geography channel which I do have a liking to for I'm into drama at times.
