Description     She has always been warned about them. Walking up too fast or taking a misstep when she wasn't paying attention and falling down them. In all honesty, she didn't actually think any of those crazy stories people had told about them and the accidents they caused were real. Well, more like just stretching the truth a little bit more than anything. So, she really wasn't weary of them. She never did try to be overly careful about them. She never even used a railing, when one was available, before. She didn't think of it as necessary.
That is, until she decided to be a complete idiot.
Returning to the dorm building long after the students of Mirai Academy had fallen asleep and long after the lights had all gone out, Alyssa stepped as quietly as possible, despite her only wearing socks. She pushed the ponytail holder which pulled back only her brown hair closer to her head, tightening it. She was really nervous that she'd accidentally wake someone up. Not only would she feel terrible about, she'd probably get in huge trouble. It was after three in the morning, after all. She opened the door to the dorm building slowly, and slipped in when there was just barely enough room for her to do so. She was glad to be back inside, as it had gotten rather cold out and she was only wearing a tank top. rubbing her hands up and down her arms to warm them up, she crept down the hall to the stairs. It was nearly pitch black inside the building, thanks to the lack of windows in the hall area and the lights being off. It was probably not the smartest idea to ascend the stairs at her normal pace in this darkness, but she had to be fast. At any moment, someone could walk out of their room and ask what the hell she was doing. Despite her being a creative writer, she was not good at coming up with things on the spot. It always took her a lot of time and thought, even more time to make it all actually make it make sense.
Reaching the looming shadow that was the staircase, she quickly began to climb them, her arms crossed. She couldn't help but feel anxious at the thought of someone coming out of their room to find her running up the stairs at this ungodly hour. Geez, why did she have to stay outside for so long? This would have been so much easier had she come inside at the normal time, or at least when there was actual light so she could see where she was stepping. Glancing back for just a moment, Alyssa tried to pick her foot up too early, causing it to hit the lip of the next stair. Time seemed to slow as she realized what had happened, and she could feel herself beginning to fall. Her arms uncrossed, one desperately reaching for the railing. Cold wood brushed against her fingertips, and her eyes widened in fear. It was too late.
If someone hadn't been awake already, the certainly were now due to Alyssa's shriek of panic and the sound of something heavy thudding down the stairs. Arms flailing and her streak of red hair hitting her face, she all but gracefully slammed into the floor at the bottom of the staircase. She moaned loudly in pain, her eyes squeezed shut. She tried to stand, but a pain in her ankle caused her to collapse to the ground once again. The sounds of people opening doors and the sudden brightness of the hall light being turned on made her already pounding head feel even worse. She could see the figure of someone standing before her, talking to her, but the room was spinning. Their voice became more and more muffled and the room swirled around her faster and faster, until there was simply nothing but darkness.

A loud groan came from her mouth as Alyssa awoke. She had no idea where she was, but she did know that she had never been in so much pain before. At least, not this much physical pain. Her head was pounding and her ankle throbbed. She felt like someone had backed over her with a sixteen wheeler. Twice. She struggled to remember what had happened, squeezing her eyes shut. The memories all came rushing back, hitting her the way she had hit the ground when she fell. The last thing she remembered was someone talking to her, probably trying to help her, but then everything was fuzzy.
"Did I pass out?" Alyssa thought. She must have, considering she didn't remember how exactly she had gotten here. Looking around the rather pristine room, she could only assume that she was in the infirmary. Funny, she couldn't recall anyone saying anything about an infirmary. Oh well, at least one was here. Although, she did seem to be alone. She couldn't hear or see anyone, and the windows that she could actually see out of without hurting herself only showed the beautiful landscape of the island.
Sighing, her eyes glanced down at the thin sheets that covered her legs. She carefully maneuvered them off her left leg, moaning in annoyance at what she saw. Her swollen ankle was wrapped tightly in bandages, the smallest hint of bruising peaking out from under them. She wiggled her toes slightly, hissing in pain. Alyssa ran her hand through her hair, which was slightly knotted and messy. Upon doing so, she felt more bandages wrapped around her head. The temptation to let out a stream of curses and profanity was growing immensely, and it was a miracle she hadn't as she fell. Or maybe she had? It was hard to remember. She simply shrugged it off, making a mental note to make a quick vent story. Writing in general always made her feel much better, but venting made it even better. She knew how unhealthy it was to keep her emotions bottled up, which is why she took up writing in the first place. It was like a release, a way to explain her emotions without actually needing to speak. There was definitely something that could be written out of all of this. Something filled with at least one furious character, probably just a simple argument scene, probably with some cursing in there somewhere.
The thought of it made her giggle, and she knew that she was already starting to feel a bit better.
It was in that moment where she realized something. Something very important, something that didn't quite occur to her at the time of her fall.
Her room was on the first floor.
She didn't even need to use the stairs in the first place.
"I really am an idiot," she sighed, shaking her head slightly.

Oh, dear me...
What a coincidence. Liam actually related a story about a ghostly haunting in one of his old schools where a ghost would push people off the stairs. Please don't tell me the ghost had followed Liam around?

Then again, he's also a notorious night-owl. Something tells me he's probably still up when this unfortunate incident happened. He probably had a role to play getting Alyssa to the infirmary. It would be like him to get her there and just disappear, too.
