Description

After years of working on my passion project of combining the DC Universe with the genre of Japanese Anime in the MDCU (Manga DC Universe), I have decided to venture into spotlighting some of the ideas I have that center around the Marvel Universe. Enter…MXO: Marvel (X) Cross Over! Here I will showcase art and stories that combine marvel characters and concepts with other established properties. My first venture in this idea was, Marvel Jedi: The Avengers. Now, I present my latest foray into the MXO venture…

MXO: Ben 10

I thought the original series of Ben 10 was one of the greatest ideas to come out of Cartoon Network, before they tried to exploit its popularity and ran the franchise into the ground. My idea was; what if the OG Ben Tennyson existed in the Marvel Universe and the alien DNA samples that were gathered in the Omnitrix were comprised of extraterrestrial species established in the comics. I started to pick out a group of aliens that were familiar and some that had similarities to the show’s initial roster. I imagine Ben’s origin would be pretty much the same, with him coming across the Omnitrix while embarking on a summer vacation roadtrip with Grandpa Max and Cousin Gwen. I also decided to stick with the overall design of the costumes established in the OG series, where all of the alien heroes were wearing variations of Black and White as the colors of their outfits. I also tried to come up with hero names that would fit the characters, as well as my idea of what a 10 year old would think of as cool.

Thoroughbred: Ability to manipulate the Fundamental Forces of: gravity, acceleration, mass, and/or energy.

Species: K’ymellian

Homeworld: K’ymellia

Representative: Aelfyre Whitemane, Kofi (Power Pack)

- In this form, Ben’s uses of the ability to manipulate the Fundamental Forces are as follows:

Gravity: Cast anti-gravity fields over himself, or anything he comes into physical contact with.

Density: Condense or expand the distance between his own molecules, to shrink or become like a gaseous cloud.

Energy: Can disintegrate matter and convert it to explosive plasma energy bolts fired from chest.

Acceleration: Accelerated movement of his self and others, in a streak of primary colored light.

Facelift: Shapeshifter

Species: Skrull

Homeworld: Tarnax IV

Representative: Talos, Xavin, Veranke (Fantastic Four)

- In this form, Ben can utilize the ability to shapeshift into most things of his approximate size that he has seen: humans, other intelligent species, animals, or objects. The changes that he undergoes in this form are superficial, and he does not acquire to abilities of the form that he is mimicking. For example: If he took the form of a shark, he still could not breathe underwater. Also, if he took the form of the X-Men’s Cyclops, he could not produce and Optic Blast, or Spider-Man’s strength. He can, however mimic voices and mannerisms after observing them.

Supremo: Self-confidence based superhuman strength, durability and flight.

Species: Strontian

Homeworld: Strontia

Representative: Gladiator aka Kallark (Imperial Guard; X-Men)

- In this form, Ben has access to a variety of immense powers, but that is all contingent on his belief in his capabilities and self-esteem (a direct take from the character of Gladiator). The challenge however, is that along with this form’s super abilities, it also has super sensitivity. Part of why I chose the name Supremo was a) a reference to Superman, from where his abilities are based on, b) the term Super and Emo, to connect to the idea that as powerful as he is, he is also “super emotional”, and can easily be depowered if he is made to doubt himself or feel embarrassed; and c) a call back to the Ben 10 character, Ultimos. A superhero from the original series, that OG Ben looked up to.

Razorwing: Bio-mechanoid weapons system

Species: Shi’ar Raptor

Homeworld: Null Space

Representative: Chris Powell, Talon, Kyte (Darkhawk)

- In this form, Ben has access to one of the bio-engineered weapons belonging to, The Fraternity of Raptors, under the control of the Shi’ar Empire. Its skin is a durable flex armor, has razor-sharp retractable glider wings, a claw weapon/grappling hook, and its chest amulet can emit energy to produce an offensive blast or defensive shield. This form also has access to a stream of information called the Datasong, which provides Ben with information about past and future events.

Bugspray: Versatile salivatory excretions; paralytic, caustic,

Species: Brood

Homeworld: Broodworld

    Representative: The Brood (X-Men)

- In this form, Ben has access to an array of effects produced by the over productive salivatory glands possessed by this species. They range from; acidic, paralyzing, hardening, sticky, slippery, and noxious. The Brood, in the comics, are known for their penchant for implanting embryos into a host, only for it to eventually take over the host by rewriting its DNA to replicate into another brood. This, in the comics is a permanent alteration, so I choose to stray away from that; but I really wanted to include the design, as it was non-humanoid and had strong familiarity. It also was very reminiscent of OG Alien Hero, Stinkfly. By focusing on the spitting of secretions, and the winged flight capabilities, I was able to keep the character in the mix. I chose the name due to his insectiod physiology and the term, “say it, don’t spray it...” in reference to the concept of spitting while talking.



Spellwinder: Highly adaptive mystical senses and abilities

Species: Lem

Homeworld: Lemista

Representative: Krugaar (Guardians of the Galaxy)

- In this form, Ben has access to the art of the Eldritch Magic. The Lem have many reptilian features, including a red scaled skin and a serpentine tail, but they (as a species) also have an inherent affinity to spellcasting. As they also don't have a visible mouth, while in this form, Ben is apparently not capable of speech.   As a result, he uses his mystical abilities and gestures to communicate non-verbally with others. Although he has the innate ability to weave magic, he still must learn the arts of spellcraft, which is where Gwen comes in an advisory capacity; as she helps him study to perfect his abilities. I chose the name by combining his magical nature with the snake, sidewinder. His costume design is heavily inspired by Krugaar's appearance as a Ravager in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

Splitter Critter: Impact based replication

Species: Druff

Homeworld: Ryas

Representative: Lil’ Devil (Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.)

- In this form, Ben has the ability to duplicate on impact. The duplicate is an exact replica, capable of all of the things the original is, including duplication. The original and each duplicate are capable of dividing into up to three identical beings. Although small and unassuming, the Druff practice the concept of strength in numbers. They can quickly overpower or overwhelm, if a confrontation becomes physical. They also are able to consume and metabolize energy, and can gnaw through steel. I chose this alien based on it adding to the variety of body types and its similarity to Alien Hero, Ditto.

Soulflare: Comprised of and able to manipulate plasma energy

Species: Ethereal

Homeworld: Unspecified location in the primordial universe

Representative: Stardust (Herald of Galactus)

- In this form, Ben has access to the abilities of an Ethereal; a race of beings of pure energy.   They are capable of energy projection, absorption, and alteration. Ben can also craft weapons out of the energy that he is comprised of to use in battle. This form is also capable of sub orbital and interstellar flight and mobility in the vacuum of space. I chose the name due to its relation to the term, Solar Flare.

Scatterbrain: Psionic mind control or attacks of multiple targets at the same time.

Species: Rigellian

Homeworld: Rigel-3

Representative: Arcturus, Zygo, YJ-18

- In this form, on top of the genius level intellect and latent psionic ability to read minds, Ben has the ability to project his mind into up to four targets at the same time. He is in complete control of the body he inhabits and they are all in mental contact with the main mind. The mind of the host he inhabits is suppressed, but they can still see what's happening. The more minds he tries to project his consciousness into, the less control over each he is able to maintain...his mental acuity also diminishes. He also loses control the farther away from each other they become. This form, like the OG Alien Hero, Grey Matter is not very useful physically, but more than makes up for it mentally. He also has similarities to Alien hero, Brainstorm.

Frightmare: Ability to phase through objects, be invisible, and probe the minds of their targets (usually when they are sleeping); possesses four arms with claws and fangs

Species: Outrider

Homeworld: Sanctuary II

Representative: Outrider (Infinity, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame)

- In this form, Ben has access to the abilities of intangibility, invisibility, and limited telepathy. By phasing his hand through their head, he is capable of probing the minds of a target (usually when they are unconscious or sleeping). This form is one of his most physical, as it possesses four arms with claws and fangs, and is particularly ferocious. It is very reminiscent of OG Alien Heroes, Four Arms and Wildmutt. I decided to make this form capable of very limited speech as opposed to make it completely incapable, as Spellwinder is incapable of speech.

* Over time, Ben will grow in his abilities.

- He will learn later on how to cast anti-gravity fields over a distance to levitate matter, generate molecular density fields by compressing matter from the atmosphere into a nigh-impenetrable barrier, and fly at superspeed as Thoroughbred.

- Initially, as Splitter Critter, Ben will be able to generate three duplicates. However, those three will only be able to generate two each, and those six will only be able to generate one. This will have him max out at a total of sixteen. Eventually he will be able to have those same groups each generate the max number of three each, allowing him to generate a total of forty.

- Gwen’s history with magic is why I decided to have her be Ben’s tutor in magic, as she will still have a fascination with it after their introduction to mystical villain, Hex.

- Gwen will also learn and attempt to teach Ben ASL (American Sign Language), to better communicate when he is operating as Spellwinder.

- Although Super Confidence fuels his abilities as, Supremo, it also has a tendency to lead to overconfidence...which has a habit of getting him into more trouble than out of it.
- Frightmare is obviusly a play on the word nightmare, and the outrider ability to enter the mind of someone sleeping and its frightening appearance.
- As Soulflare, Ben will eventually learn how to generate wormholes and localized Black Holes for limited durations of time.
