Why am I not surprised? 
In your case I think we have two possiblities. Since you are rendering with Blender Cycles you could export the model without the textures and assign them directly from the model-folder itself. I'm doing that normally to avoid an unnecessary loss of space on the harddrive.
The second variant is resaving the model as a new model. This would work like this: Load the model and go to Modify -> Save Generic_Item. Leave everything in it's default and just enable the feature "convert textures to png". Actually I don't like the png-format but it can't be helped it seems. Now save the model on a new folder and the error should be history.
