This is so amazingly beautiful, I can't even begin to describe it. Their expressions are amazing, Kumajiro is just snoozing away (which is hilarious), and, of course, America has his burgers and Canada has his pancakes. I have to admit, for someone who doesn't know much about Hetalia, you did an amazing job representing them in this picture. And the things in the background just make this picture better! The figurines, the jersey, the pictures, even the maple leaf clock that got cut off! In conclusion, I love this picture and I can only DREAM of drawing like this someday.

4.5 stars for impact because, generally speaking, unless you're a fan of Hetalia you're not getting the full emotional value of this piece. Regardless, it's very well-done and I'm afraid this critique won't do it justice. But I digress.
Like always, your use of color and chiaroscuro (to use the Italian term, meaning "light and dark") is astounding. I think you claimed to never have seen Hetalia before? Yet if I showed this to one of my Hetalia-obsessed friends they would automatically assume you're just as big a fan as they are. So bonus points for accuracy. Your backgrounds are just as tastefully done, giving a sense of depth both visually and emotionally-there's definitely a story behind the photos on the wall and the hockey figurines on that shelf.
The little details are the most important-at least, in my opinion. Things like individual buttons on the TV remote (seriously, how did you /not/ go crazy drawing that out?) and is that actual writing on the spines of those books? Once again you have created a fandom-inspired piece and made it your own. (Quite literally in this case, as the "Nijuuniville" shirt is keen to point out.)
Constructive criticism is always the hardest part to write, however. Shadows cast by a television are always extremely difficult to observe, even if you're looking at a photograph. Because the images on the TV screen are always changing, the light is always shifting and color tones change second-to-second. So while the shading in this piece may not be picture perfect, it's certainly a lot better than what I'd be able to do, and it's incredible especially considering you most likely created this room from the imaginings of your own mind.
However, I would suggest adding a few harsher, more dark shadows in places where they would be immediately cast, regardless of the lighting (ex. underneath the shelf and to the left of the metal support), and a slightly darker contrast between the walls that's being blocked by Canada's makeshift flag and the walls still receiving the glow of the TV. However, those are minor details that are easily overlooked, so I wouldn't worry about them at all.
Overall you did a fantastic job, and I sincerely look forward to your next big piece. Thank you for sharing this with us!

awoeifjawoej Finally I can get back to this LOL
first off: thank you SO much for such a thoughtful and detailed feedback, I appreciate it LOADS and I hope to improve with it 8D <333
I am really fascinated with the concept of chiaroscuro--it's one of the reasons Baroque art is probably my favourite era of artwork--and it's been a challenge for me to, i guess, get the courage to shade things darker and make things more volumous, so thank you for mentioning it .I agree with you about the difficulty with the shadows and lights cast from the television--I was having trouble actually figuring out how deep/lengthy to cast the shadows, and how strong to place the lights in a dimmed room. I still have a lot to learn to draw things to better realistic accuracy, but feedback like yours is super encouraging c:
Haha, yeah, I know close to nothing about Hetalia so i'm pretty happy I could capture things accurately 8'D NO THERE'S ACTUAL TEXT ON THE BOOKS LOOOOOL they're just--really tiny scribbles. Mmyes, I give myself a smug pat on the back for Nijuuville--if I could I'd ttly make a bunch of jerseys for my own colony of peoples LOOOL
Thank you again, sweetie! *muah*
