Yepp I still think that April only got a chance to escape, because Karai did play with her instead of attacking her seriously. Otherwise would April have been down with two or three hits.
It is kind of Karais biggest flaw at the moment that she doesn't take her missions too serious.

I don't think that she is evil. Probably are the turtles and April the first people in her own age she had to do with. She doesn't know how friendship works.
And of course did she want to take it slow with April. She wanted her to suffer, because Karai was mad and jealous of her.
I think Karai is in the foot only valued as Shredders daughter and not for herself. From her pov has April many advantages for no reason. She grew up with a loving father (and mother as far as she thought), has friends who would risk their lives for her and gets trained from a grandmaster of ninjitsu and all that without having some special abilities or social status. She doesn't understand that people do something nice for each other without thinking of their own benefits, since all she got from people in the foot was for the sake of getting close to her father.
I can truly understand why Karai acts the way she does. She isn't evil, just a frustrated teenager, who goes rampant from time to time to get attention.
I hope my theory makes sense. XD
